"Mobile Network" greyed out

Sometimes I will completely lose my data connection on this phone and when I go Quick Settings I noticed that the "Mobile Network" check box will be unchecked and greyed out so I can't even re-check it to enable the mobile network.  This has happened several times randomly and I know that I'm not accidentally unchecking the Mobile Network box. A power cycle will fix the problem but I shouldn't be forced to do multiple power cycles every day.

I'm also having the phone constantly switch from 3G to 1X to no data at all while my phone sits in the same spot on my desk.

I've tried *#*#4636#*#* and *22899 and ##778 and nothing has fixed the issue.   I've also enabled data roaming.

Any suggestions?

Have you checked that the wifi isnt on because I have seen this happen when the wifi starts scanning for a connection when it sees a wifi connection?

Wi-fi is off when this happens.

I've downloaded the LTE On/Off app from the Market and that seems to be able to bring the data connection back but it's still ridiculous that I have to download a separate app and use it 5-10 times a day just to be able to have a working data connection.

I have seen this grayed out issue occasionally as well. I haven't been able to determine a pattern to why or when.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

I also get this. I restart and it takes like 5 min and data is back. Also it will happen if I go into a building that I don't get service in. I go back outside and it goes to 1x and will not return to 3g even trying to disable and then enable data widget also tried airplane mode and that doesn't help, only restarting phone brings back 3g

I have seen it occasionally, I usually notice it when I am at work and I am listing to Pandora or TuneIn Radio...   Everyone with this issue are you in a new or recent added 4g area when you notice the drop?

If you count since September as recent. The only place I know that I have seen it is in my usual troubled area. Inside a multi-story office building in downtown. I can't verify anywhere else.

I am in a new 4G area but I was having this issue prior to 4G being turned on.

The issue is that before the 4g switch was powered on in some areas it effected the 3g data also because of the intergration process and I understood that.  I am hoping for a stable connection, even for a little while because my job require me to access online data regularly and my patence is running thin.

This morning I was sitting in a meeting sitting right next to someone with a stock Thunderbolt (same hardware and software as mine) and they had 4G data and I had 1X data.  **bleep**?

I'm powering down and restarting more frequently because of this.  The second update (smaller, around 10/27/11) seemed to fix a few problems from the first Gingerbread update, but left me with irregular network access.  I, too, see 1x when I'm in a 3G or 4G area, every two or three days at the longest.  (Sometimes more frequently.)

A service rep suggested pulling the battery and the SIM card, waiting a few minutes, and then booting up again.  Powering down and doing a cold start has helped after that initial time (I don't have the desire to scratch up the case trying to pry it open again and again).  A reboot is not the same as a cold start from "Power down" state, apparently.

If there were hope of a better replacement, I'd be looking to Verizon to get one (requires two things: hope for a replacement, and a better replacement to be had): this has been one of the most delightful and simultaneously the most troublesome tech devices I've ever owned.

drecien, I know this can frustrating to have a phone that is constantly switching signal, so I am going to look into this for you. I was able to review this issue in more detail and show it has been reported to our technical team. They are gathering additional information as more reports are being made to find a resolution for the issue. We will continue to work on this problem so that we may find a solution that will help our customers. I will recommend logging into your Google account and checking if Mobile network is checked. You can also check the network connections on your device with the steps below.

  1. From the Home screen, select the applications tab (lower-left corner).

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Select Wireless & networks.

  4. Select Mobile networks.

  5. Select Network mode.

  6. Select the option.

    • LTE/CDMA

    • CDMA only

Listed below are steps to initiate a 3G connection only. IF your experiencing the issue with the phone trying to pick up a 4g signal and its going between the two, you can use the steps below to only connect to 3g.

Data Connection SHOULD return

1. Open Dial Pad - Dial: ##778 Send

2. Select: EPST Edit mode, Password: 000000

3. Select: Modem Settings

4. Select and modify Rev. A to ENABLED

5. Touch "Menu" and select "Commit Modifications"

6. The device will reset in 10 seconds.

Sorry, but changing my phone to be only 3G is not a solution, it's a work around and a crappy one at that.  I think you guys have an issue with your 4G/3G handoff and it's not limited to the Thunderbolt.
