Hi Guys!
I've been searching for clarification on email and hope someone can help me! I'm leaning toward upgrading to the Onem or Twom next week for the fact that the recently re-released Kin's "smartphone-like" features as well as pic/vid quality will be nice to have without the Data charge. I'm a freelance graphic designer and jewelry designer (so I own my own business and am trying to keep communication costs down this year and I work from home so having constant email is not a must for me right now).
OK having given you guys a couple quick reasons why I like these phones... I've seen many reviews on youtube and read many reviews online... but can't find an answer to this specific question:
1- I have email through godaddy (who hosts my site). The email is EXCHANGE which I can set up through my iPod touch (just FYI). I've heard conflicting comments that a person is unable to set the email up on the Kins without the data package... Is this true? Or can I set it up and then it only updates when I have wifi?
I am still back and forth on this phone. I do have an i touch but really... how many devices can a person carry? mp3, camera (i do take a fair amount of vid and pics) and oh yeah...phone.
Also.. One more question:
2-Easy to transfer pics/vid to computer?
Thank you guys in advance for your help. I'm a "little" older than the target market for this phone... but hey...why not?! Seems fun!

Hey Martin,
Question 1....you CAN set up email without a data plan. However, the issue might be with exchange not being compatible. From what Ive read, you can manually put in all the numbers in the imap/pop account settings to set up your email. Since I do not have exchange, I cant verify 100 percent. But either way, you dont need a data plan for it. When the email is set up, make sure you change the setting to "sync manually" and you can check your email whenever you have access to wifi.
Question 2.....you must download the zune software onto your pc in order to trasfer pics/vids. Its quite easy to do once its all set up. Simple drag and drop from the phone to the pc through the zune software and your all set. But you MUST use the zune software.

1. My work email account is through GoDaddy. However, i can't quite answer your question since i forward that mail to a gmail account of mine. I know Gmail works, and the phone is also compatible with Hotmail/MSN, yahoo, and POP email accounts. You can set up GoDaddy accounts through POP, i think i remember someone saying they successfully did it, but i can't verify. If all else fails though, just create a new gmail account and forward all your work email there. Email works fine with just the wifi; that is, if you successfully get the wifi working. Be a little cautious, the Kin's wifi is quite a bit worse than an iTouch's wifi. I personally have not had problems, but there are many others on these forums that have. Just a heads up.
2. Daveman answered it; have to use Zune software, but once you do download it and configure the settings, you will find it is very, very convenient. It is a windows program, so it is highly compatible with the windows interface. However, if you own a mac, i'm sorry to inform you that Zune does not run on mac's. There were a few people talking about a workaround though, and they were successfully able to use a separate software to perform like Zune does, on the mac.

Thank you both for posting so quickly! Funny... it's technology... there's always some kind of need for a workaround. I'll buy the kin and work with the email... (I'm sure I can make it work) and excited to play with Zune! Thanks again you guys! Cheers!

I've heard conflicting comments that a person is unable to set the email up on the Kins without the data package... Is this true? Or can I set it up and then it only updates when I have wifi? You can definitely set up e-mail without the data package. GoDaddy email does work with the Kin devices (I am a freelancer too and have an email account through my GoDaddy site). If you're not blocking 3G data, set it to check e-mail manually. I will tell you though that the Kin Wi-Fi is "buggy" for some users, depending on your wireless network, and your e-mail might not always work. But if you're working from home and near computers all day, it's probably not a big deal.
I am still back and forth on this phone. I do have an i touch but really... how many devices can a person carry? mp3, camera (i do take a fair amount of vid and pics) and oh yeah...phone. Whether or not you'll be happy with this phone depends on which device you're coming from, smartphone or regular phone.
Also.. One more question:
2-Easy to transfer pics/vid to computer? Yes, very easy to transfer through Zune. The only problem I've read about is an inability to save videos to computer. Hopefully someone has found a way around that.
Good luck with your business!!!!

I mean I will have to if I don't want to pay the data charges right?I will tell you though that the Kin Wi-Fi is "buggy" for some users, depending on your wireless network, and your e-mail might not always work. But if you're working from home and near computers all day, it's probably not a big deal. (not too worried about it... but I have realized that when I ask clients to respond via text- they will respond to email anyway... thus just trying to work more efficiently... get what the client needs and ultimately paid faster!

Thank you SydneyK.. Wishing you luck on your biz as well!
