Don't think so... Why are you wanting that option? So that you know at a glance whether or not mobile data is on?

Well, I never really gave it much thought until recently. I know my past phones have removed the 4G icon when mobile data is off. Thing is, I have noticed slight mobile data use while mobile data is turned off. I suppose it is a reassurance that mobile data is really off if the icon is gone. I also note that the signal strenth in the notification bar represents the 4G strength, which, if turned off, shouldn't be measuring anything. IOW, the signal strength indicator does not reference the cellular voice stream. Now, I know that to send SMS data is part of the process, but even back in 3G days one could send text with data off. MMS is of course another story. Petty stuff perhaps, but on a 1 GB plan, every little bit helps. I know the G2 has a lot of features that were removed in the VZW version as far as settings and software are concerned. This could just be some other locked down aspect.

See, I don't know, I've always been under the impression that the signal bars do indeed represent the cellular voice signal.

On the G2 you can go to settings, networks, network type and strength. The bars will never match usually. The voice will be stronger and the data weaker, you can match the strength there to the bars in the notification area. This would be with wifi and data enabled or separate.

Yeah, try the following:
1). Pull down notification bar / shade.
2). Locate Airplane mode and turn it on (this will turn off WiFi and Cellular Radios)...
3). Turn on WiFi.

Worked, except that prevents SMS.

You're killing me. You didn't state that as a requirement did you? You know SMS uses the voice channel... So you rigged the challenge so one couldn't be successful helping you. I feel so... used.
Yeah, instead of SMS, and I presume for a few critical contacts, use something like Whatsapp (there are others) that can use a WiFi connection.
Some people... ya can't make them happy no matter what. (Don't be one of those people).

What requirement? Whats rigged? I dont ask questions just to play games. I'm not asking how to turn off everything. I know SMS uses voice. MMS uses data. WhatsApp uses data, so that doesn't help. I have wifi at home. That and my 1gb plan is why i turn off fata. All I'm asking about is why is the icon displayed and signal strength visible in settings if the mobile data is off? Don't start sounding like a vzw rep with cutesy replies. Lol

Looks like, unless you turn on Airplane mode, Data isn't completely disabled over the cellular network. That's all. And I managed to provide you a means to turn off the cellular radio, with the WiFi radio enabled.
I was trying to suggest a texting alternative that would work on WiFi.
Really? I was sounding like a vzw rep?

OK, I think what I was trying to ask and explain might have delved into more complicated areas. Initially I wanted to remove the 4G icon, as without mobile data on I saw no sense in its presence. I then noted that even with mobile data off, that the data radio was still able to receive and display signal. Now, with wifi only in airplane mode, yes browsing is possible and texting could be done with another app, but to be clear, I was looking to keep cellular signal on for calls and texts when out and away from home wifi, but keep mobile data off to keep my use low given my plan allowance. In the end, it seems I can wifi in airplane mode and text with another app, or I can turn off mobile data only, but the concern is still there and the question hasn't been answered by VZW as to why, if data is off, does the radio stay on? It's like the radio persists with power, but doesn't transmit or receive. Strange to me either way.

When I turn data off my 4G icon goes away and I turn my WiFi off when I'm not at home and connected to router. The only thing showing is my signal bars if you have apps that you have syncing on regular basis it will turn data off. My step daughters Mom won't get an internet connection so she uses her hotspot. I had to get a 40G data plan which sucks for me. I also keep my Verizon data short cut app on my home page to keep track of usage. Step daughter was grounded from her phone and my usage so far this month is .0108 since 12/27. I remember when my data was part of the everything plan. Oh those were the good old days

Yes it is off if I turn both off I only have reception bar on. They stay off until I open an app that uses it.

Thanks for the clarification. That's what Id like mine to do. With your mobile data off, when you go to Settings-Tethering and Networks-Mobile Networks-Network Type and Strength...do you see 4G xxxdBm and 1X xxxdBm?

Yes they show up in my settings still. I think in the settings it is telling you what your phone will connect to when you use it. Since some people still only have access to 3G.

I didn't remember if you said you turned your location access off. If not it will keep your 4G icon on

That is very interesting. Yes location data is on because some apps require that, like lost phone finder apps, but data should still be off. I understand your point though.

I thought location services were GPS based.

GPS will ask if you want to turn location on when you use it. I don't like the idea that people could locate me if I'm on social media site or Google.
