Why can't I see the keypad when I am on a call?

I am having trouble with setting up my phone. When I make a call the screen is black and I cannot find out how to bring the keypad back up to press any buttons or to hang up the call. I have to disconnect from the call with the power button which is a pain because I like to use speakerphone and cannot use it without the keypad. I also get a black screen about half the time someone calls and have no way to answer the call. I know I have got to have a setting messed up but cannot figure out what to do

Double tap the screen. While in use it brings the screen back on.

Now go into settings, and change the screen time out. This way it won't shut down until you want it to.

Read your owners manual all these settings are explained. If you don't have one go to http://www.lgusa.com

Enter your device model number (the name LG G2 does not bring it up in the download section)
