ATTN Verizon. ICS Upgrade & Poor Battery Life on MAXX

I did not want or need the ICS update, but now that I have it, my MAXX battery life is half of what it used to be.

  • I Tried the Factory Reset with no luck.
  • Checked out all my app settings for background syncing etc
  • I already have Smart Actions setup to turn off everything at night. No improvement.
  • My Wifes RAZR MAXX is having the same issue as well.
  • I'm reading tons of complaints on Google about the same this with ICS on all devices and carriers.

This update has made my life less convenient and as a customer I am not enjoying it. Please look into this and provide a solution/fix.

Thank you,

JW

Im with Jim my battery life is nearly the same as before the update. I dont have any smart actions set and have it sync quite often . Background data is enabled. i dont use much during the day do to my work but use heavily in the evenings and due to a recent power loss i didnt charge in 3 full days. I was down to 20  percent but for 3 days thats great by my standards.   Hope you get it sorted out                                           Jesse

No, that will NOT help battery life in any way.

This upgrade has been TERRIBLE for my RAZR.  Battery used to last all day, now it's about 2 -3 hours.  I've seen numerous complaints on other boards.

The problem seems to be with "Media" and it's related apps.  Can't kill or remove the app because it's basic to the phone.  According to the battery monitor, this is sucking all the life out of the battery.  I've tried suggestions from other boards, including removing ALL media from the phone, as well as the SD card.  It's still sucking all the life out of the battery.

Note:  I have a Motorola XOOM that upgraded a couple of months ago.  No problem.

You may not be able to remove the app's that come pre-installed, but you can disable them to prevent them from running. Just go to settings, and apps, and then the far right tab marked "all". Find the program you want disabled and select it and instead of uninstall it should have "disable". If it doesn't you will need to select "uninstall updates" first and then select it again to disable it. This has been a great help to me in disabling the VZ Navigator and some other irritating bloatware.

I just now read a similiar thread on the Moto board. Here is what one guy cliams fixed his problem after the first factory reset did not fix the problem:

"Ok, Well it may be in order then. Here's some interesting things I have noticed through my own trial and error since I updated ota. My battery times were ok I wasn't having that much of a problem with it, but my phone was slighty laggy. I suspected a few apps were conflicting a bit so I gave it about 2 days before I did the Factory reset. Here's where I noticed the difference in my battery times.

The first factory reset I did I backed up my app data through the process of the fdr when it asked me before I wiped it so that it would restore all my apps back with their settings still in tact. Well after my phone reset I let google services add everything back for me with all the app settings in place. Worked smooth and worked fine. Everything went back on my phone without a hitch. But my phone got laggy really bad. I gave it a couple of hours and realized the apps settings I put back in place just made the reset even worse. Made my battery times worse also. So I went back and did another factory reset, the process only takes about 5 minutes so I figured why not. Here's where things changed for me. I just did a factory reset with no backed up app setting. When it asked if I wanted to let google reinstall any apps and contacts with their settings after the re-boot of the reset I said no. I re-installed all my apps back fresh and clean. NO backed up settings. WOW what a difference that made with my phone. It then acted like it did before I upgraded to ICS. My Razr was bad ass again. My battery times are better and it runs silky smooth. I'm assuming a lot of the problems was the apps still had all their settings set to GB. With a factory reset and no backed up data from the apps and a clean install of them all my problems disappeared and that's when my battery time got even better."

Hope it is helpful.

My boyfriend got the Razr a week ago. The battery seems to be worse than my Bionic. However, this morning his battery is almost dead after being off the charger for 2 hours!!!!! I was setting up his phone 2 days ago and found 2 updates, I'm assuming it's this ICS, which I knew nothing about until now. The only reason we got him this phone was because Best Buy had it for $99. This is ridiculous!! He doesn't listen to music, uses no social apps, makes VERY few calls or texts.

My battery life span didn't change a bit.No factory reset or anything. I haven't even powered down the phone since the update last week. I have to say though that I don't have many apps installed. Reading other comments indicates that some apps using old GB settings may be at fault. I think regor3 has a great idea about reinstalling your apps and not using the backups.

The battery life is the same or better on my Razr Maxx since installing ICS.

Battery the same - Before disabling all of the Bloatware on the phone my battery life did not change

After Disabling all of the Bloatware on my phone, my battery life increased by about 8% which I feel is great.

I have used many phones during and aftre upgrades of the OS. Usually what happens (personally experienced and heard from others) is, the user is used to how the phone worked, and now that it has new software and features on it, you are cruising your phone more to see what has changed, and trying new things etc... that you use more battery.  This goes on for about a week then you are comfortable with how th enew OS works so you go back to your normal usage.

That said, I would go back and make sure that your Smart Actions is setup correctly under th enew OS.

Check to make sure that Bluetooth and Wi Fi is not turned on all the time as these setting can change with OS updates.

Are you running any kind of task killers? That will REALLY do a number on your battery.

Everyone with battery issues.  Motorola is well aware of the issue and they are working on a fix, I read in Engadet or Android Central that it should be coming out soon.  But my personal opinion is that us RAZR and MAXX user should get jelly bean ASAP

One thing to try (especially if you are in a 3G only Area) is to get one of the apps or the code to the hidden menu (both are out there) that will allow you to turn OFF the seek for 4G. If you are in a 3G only area, your phone is constantly searching for the 4G network and that results in only 1 thing when it cannot find the 4G network., That one thing is your battery drains super fast.

I agree totally. Since the 'upgrade' to ICS my phone goes from 100 to 30 percent in about 12 hours. Before it would last for days! I had it on standby for 3 days before, now it's 12 hours with no changes. Nothing is running. I hate it. I will have to see if I can make it go back to GB. I have a Razr.

I do not turn the phone off to charge it. I figure 100% is 100% on or off. It’s just laying there charging on the charger. It’s getting all the juice it wants.

On the brighter side, I did manage to get the battery life to be a little better.

I went into system settings, more, mobile networks, network mode, and changed it from Global to LTE/CDMA. I got this tip from another user on the forums here.  It did HELP but my battery life is still bad.
Today I had the phone charged to 100%. Unplugged it and put it on and went to work. I may have pushed the button and turned it on, read the time, and pushed the button again immediately may be twice. That’s it. Nothing else. In 11 hours it went to 50%. To me that’s not good. But, it is a lot better than it was.

Also, to some of the other suggestions..........why does everyone have to make their $700 SMART PHONE as
dumb as possible and delete and disable everything on the phone just to make it work?  This just doesn’t sound like a good solution to me. Sorry if I hurt anyone’s feelings but you don’t buy a $700 SMART PHONE to have it on standby with the display off or as low as it will go and nothing able to run on it. Thanks for letting me rant.
