The Moto X 2014 was originally advertised as one of the first phones that would have VoLTE, yet months later, the capability is still lacking. Several Verizon phones have received this update, but not this phone. When will the update be sent out?
I'm glad to read that you share the same passion as we do for the latest and greatest in wireless technology MissyAL! While there isn't any official info available on Advanced Calling for the Moto X, a great way to stay in the know is to visit our news site weekly. I know you really want this HD Calling, but I have to tell you, if you have heard anything about this feature you know its great when it works, but many of us, since Sept 2014, have dropped and missed calls, mms that stalls and other issues with the service of the network, not so much our phones. Maybe it will all be worked out by the time you get the feature.
This is ridiculous. When I bought my Moto X it was supposed to be the greatest phone ever and I was assured it was simply a matter of a software update and I would soon have simultaneous voice and data (like the phone I "upgraded" from already had). Now it's months later and incoming calls are still killing my data connection and we have no idea when this promised feature will be available. Total false advertising.
Are we ever going to get advanced calling?
That's not correct. When you've selected VoLTE (Advanced Calling), ALL your calls will be transported via LTE as long as you are in LTE coverage regardless of if you're calling another cell or land line phone. This means you will have simultaneous voice and data. The HD voice (enhanced AMR-WB 12 kbps vocoder) only happens when BOTH phones (caller and receiver support it), otherwise, the vocoder (codec) will be a lower quality one, but the call is still carried over LTE allowing for simultaneous voice and data. This is why you'd drop the call if you moved out of LTE coverage while on a call with VoLTE (regardless of the recipient of that call). Short answer: VoLTE is always on whenever you are in LTE areas, but the HD voice portion (higher quality) requires the other party to ALSO be VoLTE.
I think Verizon / Motorola should have NEVER offered this phone for sale without VoLTE out of the box since it was designed without SVLTE hardware functionality that all other (previous) smartphones have. I think it is COMPLETELY unacceptable that this phone has lived over 25% of its life (6 months) without this basic ability leaving it crippled whilst the droid turbo was immediately upgraded to VoLTE. Honestly, I couldn't care less about Lollipop-- I want VoLTE-- it's a basic function of the phone for which it was designed!
When is Verizon going to give us a real response on advanced calling? Is the 2nd gen. Moto X the only higher end smart phones that doesn't have this feature? I'd be willing to bet that almost everyone who "upgraded" to this phone did so from a phone that was already capable of simultaneous voice and data; I know I did. Even the iPhones now have it on Verizon. I would really like my money back, but I doubt that, even with global warming, hell is going to freeze over any time soon.
Actually, the 2nd gen Moto X and Sony Xperia Z3v are the ONLY non-iPhone smartphones that cannot do simultaneous call with data now. The Droid Turbo and Nexus 6 were designed the same way, but they now both have VoLTE. In fact, the firmware for the Nexus 6 with Android 5.1 and VoLTE that was released TWO MONTHS ago is almost exactly what the Moto X 2nd gen should have, if they'd ever spend any effort to port it over. It is really insulting to Moto X users that the Droid Turbo had this design limitation remedied within a month of its release back in December. The Moto X has been out for almost 8 months now in its crippled form. There is no reason that Verizon and Motorola couldn't have either given Moto X users a modified Droid Turbo 4.4.4 software or Nexus 6 5.1 software by now. This was my 2nd Motorola smartphone, but it will likely be my last. Verizon should've never offered the phone for sale without the VoLTE feature working as this is required for normal use. Even if you don't care to use data while talking or or on WiFi, since MMS messages now are carried on LTE, you have to hangup the call to get an MMS message! It is ridiculous that this issue hasn't been fixed by now, nor is there any indication or confirmation that they are even working on solving this major problem!
Looks like its time to find another carrier...my contract is up next month so Verizon be on the lookout, poor response to simple questions is why customers get frustrated and leave...
We don’t want you to go, that would break our hearts. I am sorry to learn that you feel that your question was not answered. We are here to help. What question was asked that was not fully answered for you?

You (nor ANYONE at Verizon or Motorola) have failed to tell us WHEN our phones (Moto X 2nd edition XT1096) will no longer be crippled requiring us to hang up a call to receive an MMS message or use LTE data. These phones were designed like the Droid Turbo to use VoLTE (Advanced Calling) to allow simultaneous data & voice use. While the turbo was upgraded to allow this functionality in December 2014 (about a month after its launch), our phone which is almost identical to the turbo has not received this since its September 2014 launch. No one at either company despite multiple contact attempts has even confirmed that we ever will get this feature for which our phones were designed. They do NOT function properly on Verizon's network without this functionality since the MMS messages are carried via IMS (on the LTE network), and they cannot maintain an LTE connection while in phone service since they don't have a separate CDMA transmission circuit nor VoLTE functionality despite the hardware support. Bottom line is that if you don't tell XT1096 owners when they can expect the software upgrade to enable this built-in function of the phone to work, we will all likely leave or at least change phones to something that isn't crippled. 9 months is way too long to wait for an essential feature!
I'm with you. I'm extremely frustrated with this. When I bought the phone I was told it would be updated shortly to support simultaneous voice and data. Honestly I could care less about the HD calling I just want to be able to use data while making a phone call. This is not what I was told when I bought this phone. There are cheaper less advance phones that have this basic functionality but we are stuck with top of the line phone that doesn't even allow us to perform simple tasks. I want to know when this functionality will be available. Will it be available with the upcoming 5.1 update?
Also, I hope the upcoming 5.1 update fixed the battery bug where it reads that there is still juice left in the batter but the phone shuts down as if the battery is dead.
This article on DroidLife says that Verizon has finally released Moto X 5.1 software update today but stripped this of VoLTE/HD Calling that we have all been waiting for since the phone launched.

This might push me to get rid of this phone. Seriously?!

I agree... If they continue to block VoLTE on this phone, I'm dumping it.
They had to remove or block it from the Android 5.1 native support. There
is no excuse for this since both the nexus 6 and droid turbo have it with
the same radio configuration and the galaxy S5 and LG G3 have it with the
same processor. This is the newest phone on Verizon without the feature!
The problem is that all the other phones are even bigger! Maybe someone
with a 1st gen X will swap with me...
I have installed the new update from Verizon for Moto X (2nd gen.) version 23.16.3 and I think Verizon is definately still blocking access to this "feature" of VoLTE. I can't activate it on my verizon.com or on the phone after it rebooted into the new version.
Disappointing. Not only where we promised at sign up that they were just going to patch in the VoLTE capabilities, but now Verizon just dodges the question.
At least tell us that we were lied to. Its better then holding onto hope...
When is Verizon going to respond to this? I have had this phone for almost a year and thought that today's update would finally bring advanced calling to the 2nd gen Moto X. Will Verizon give me a free upgrade to a phone that actually works as advertised?
I emailed Motorola about the VoLTE availability and they said it's a Verizon issue, but at least they had the decency to respond.
I talked to Verizon level two support this week. The engineer tried hard to see why it would not let him add HD Voice/VoLTE to my Moto X second gen line. His notes said this feature launches spring 2015!!!? It's summer and not a peep from Verizon. Shameful. Update your Internal notes to show when you intend to give us a feature every other Moto phone has.
Funny how Verizon won't respond with anything other then "We don't have an exact date" to customers wondering why a feature that Verizon touts isn't on a phone they purchased and have been told would be available in fall of 2014. That is an unacceptable answer at this point.
Ok, Verizon. Seriously... What the Frick?!! I called your tech support the day after the 5.1 OTA, which was supposed to have delivered VoLTE, and talked to a very nice support tech who was confused why I didn't see the option on my screen because her notes said it should be there. How is it that a "flagship" that was supposed to get this feature within 1 update cycle still does not have the ability to be on the phone and using 4g at the same time when my Droid RAZR, Droid X, and Droid MAXX ALL had it???? I know that this is is slightly different in that 4g is used for both, but seriously... TEST!! As an IT professional, I'd be fired if i promised functionality and never delivered!! Get with it, or provide some kind of blasted guidance as to why this still isn't here. It's ridiculous already!!
The DROID Razr and the DROID Maxx could handle voice and data simultaneously because they had two radios to transmit separately. The Droid X was a 3G EDVO only smartphone and couldn't handle voice and data simultaneously with only one radio. The. Moto X 2014 has only one radio as well which is why it can't handle voice and data simultaneously unless it has Advanced Calling enabled. Since it doesn't at the moment, the people who own that phone are back to the old status quo from the 3G EDVO only smartphones days.
My bad. I forgot the X was CDMA, but as I indicated, am aware of the difference re: a single 4g radio vs separate 3/4g. That's not the point. The point is that VZW advertised the availability of a device feature that has never come to market. Honestly, I'm surprised they haven't been investigated for false advertising yet.
I am thinking it's time to move to AT&T, VZW keeps crippling great phones like the Moto X (2014) and I wonder why i changed from the Moto X (2013) which worked perfectly!
The reason we love the Android platform is options, VZW you are acting like Apple and forcing consumers into your limited view of the world.
I would add to that that most of us who are drawn to phones like the Moto X over Samsung/HTC et al do so because we like the stock Android interface, and don't want our UI hampered by skinning and featureset determined by the manufacturer. Being thoughtful about this is probably a good indicator that people interested in phones like these are among the more tech savvy of phone users -- and therefore the ones with the highest demand for features like simultaneous voice and data. I have had the same experience with VZ on this issue as many here -- VZ's first response was to point the finger at Motorola, until you dig in and learn that Motorola is not the culprit and that VZ has to release the feature for the Moto X. I am a small business owner, and I can't tell you how many times I've been on the phone and the inability to use simultaneous data has hamstrung me in a meaningful way. I can be on the phone for hours at a time, and not being able to see inbound email or texts can literally cost me money. The least VZ can do is provide some clarity so I can make a business decision as to whether I can afford to wait any longer or if I need to bite the bullet and get a phone that works the way I need it to.
I have the Moto X 2014 and I don't feel that I NEED the Advanced Calling feature enabled on my line. I prefer the UI on the Motorola and HTC phones over the Samsung phones. I also had activated on my line in the last year a phone that I could have enabled the Advanced Calling feature. I chose not to because I felt the 1xRTT voice network was more reliable for the places I work and live along with the locations I travel to for work. I decided to switch from the other phone (that had the Advanced Calling feature) to the Moto X because the Moto X 2014 offered a more preferred experience of the UI with it. I also have experienced receiving a phone call while running the Navigation and didn't have a diminished experience for the loss of the data connection.
I thought people said AC1.0 was already put into this phone? or was I mistaken? I see a lot of people complaining about it, and the fact of the matter is Motorola hasn't done a soak test with it so Motorola hasn't finished doing what they are doing before submitting it to Verizon... Complaining to Verizon isn't going to get it to go faster...
Soak test of some sort is about to roll out. Some speculate it may be AC. Did you get the email or even sign up for the beta testing from Motorola. You'll learn some interesting things if they ever select you.

I have been on the phone with Verizon vand Motorola at the same time with no clear answer. I was told that hopefully it would be on the next update it has been almost a year since the phone was released. I think the phone has a design flaw that won't allow the feature.
Just an FYI for everyone on this post. I ditched my Moto X, for the Nexus 6. So glad I did, and I really do love the VoLTE calling. When I call someone else that has it enabled, the call is so completely crystal clear. My biggest frustration was that Verizon announced the 2nd gen Moto X has being one of the first phones that would be ready for VoLTE, and it looks like it still doesn't have it... big let down.
AC is awesome, when it works.
Latest update does not, of course, include VoLTE. Just a security update. Frustration continues to build. AT&T sending flyers with $500/line credits to cut over. Temptation growing.
In October 2014, I purchased the 2014 version of the Moto X. I was promised advanced calling would be available. A year a later, it's still not available. Verizon refuses to let me upgrade without paying $200 for early upgrade. You guys sold me, and several million other customers, a bill of goods that you have failed to provide. After an hour and a half on the phone with various "customer service" reps, I was finally told by someone on your "leadership team" that advanced calling would never be coming to the Moto X 2014. I then asked her to make a public statement affirming that, only to hear her immediately begin backtracking stating there just wasn't a date set. You have blatantly robbed people of their money and are forcing them to keep paying for devices which don't work the way you told us they would. And you continue to blame Motorola for the problem. I read aloud Motorola's public statement announcing the feature in their May 2015 update to Android 5.1. At which time, you began again with the circular bs wanting me to pay you to get out from under a phone that doesn't do what you said it would do. This post is a courtesy letting you know I will be very noisy about this issue, not just on social media, but to every government authority which may be able to do anything. All you had to do was waive that stupid fee and let me upgrade to the Turbo 2 today.
I have been told by Verizon that I should buy a new phone if I really need this feature. But, I would still have to pay the monthly fee for this phone or pay it off and sell it. I might stay with Verizon after this but will never buy another Motorola phone.
Does anyone from Verizon even read the complaints that it's customers are leaving regarding their failure give Moto X 2014 owners a feature that was told would be arriving back in fall of 2014? How about an answer of "No you aren't getting it because you as a customer do not matter." That would be a better answer then NOTHING!
We first learned about the possibility of Verizon's advanced calling features on or around August 24th 2014. Reporters speculated that of the first to receive such a feature would likely be the follow up to Motorola's hit flagship phone, the Moto X. On September 14, 2014, Android Authority reported that Moto X (2nd Gen) 2014 would be the first device on Verizon Wireless to feature VoIP or VoLTE or Advandced Voice Calling 1.0. On September 15th, VoLTE was expected to launch. A roll out had been confirmed, however an unspecified number of devices were set to receive the device but it is unclear how many actually did. On September 20th 2014, Phandroid confirmed that XT1096 would NOT feature VoLTE at launch. Pre-orders for the Moto X+1 were expected to take place September 26th 2014. Verizon stoked the flame, allowing "leaks" to grab headlines about "sources all-but-confirming" that VoLTE would be rolled into the Lollipop update around November 22 2014, but this proved to be baseless. The reason for this rumor was because around the same time, Motorola had just completed Soak tests for the Pure version which included advanced calling. On April 10th 2015, Verizon alleged that since its September 2014 rollout to 15 different devices, over a billion calls have been placed using this technology. BUT NONE OF THEM TOOK PLACE ON THE XT1096. And none of them ever will. We are on 5.1.x and we have been hoodwinked into thinking advancements were coming. They never came. Just like we'll never get Marshamllow, how we'll never get Smart Unlock and how we'll never regret falling for this trap.
