Battery Life on Droid Razer is horrible
I feel your pain! I started using the Smart Actions app to turn on wireless and turn off the data connection whenever I was within range of one of my known WLAN's. This has helped tremendously. Make sure screen brightness is on Auto and that no user-installed apps are running amok either.
Best of luck!
How do you know if the apps are running in the background - my battery life is horrible too - I gt maybe a day out of it!
If you get a day out of it then you are Blessed.
I am getting about 16 hours out of mine with moderate usage and connected to wifi all day.. This is very good for an android phone. In a 16 hour day everyone has access to a charger at some point if needed.
I don't know if you are using Smart Actions but you might look into that. Another recommendation is Juice Defender. It has a free version and two paid versions that give you more options. I have found JD to be even better than Smart Actions for me, giving me a long day of moderate use on a battery.
Well, I'm an 'oldster', this is my second DROID and I'm going to keep working at it, but the smart actions app is evidently over my head!! I have some parts of it working, but if you have the wrong 'trigger' or whatever it doesn't work!! I'm still doing trial and error! Is Juice Defender simpler that Smart Actions??? :smileyhappy:
I'm an 'oldster' too, but you can call me Grandma. :smileyhappy: Yes, imho, Juice Defender is simpler as they have screens you can look at and enable or not certain actions. There's an explanation for them too.
You can read more about it at http://www.juicedefender.com/ including a pretty inclusive Support page. You can start with the free version and see if you like it. If your needs aren't too complicated, you may not even want or need a paid version.
Thank you I will definitely check it out!! Oh and I'm a grandmother also.... you can call me Nonna!! I love all this hi tech stuff, especially when I get it figured out! I can fix all my grandkids laptops when they get viruses, spyware and all that stuff...this phone will not get the best of me! My next venture is an android tablet! Thank you again!!
OK here is my suggestion, and I can go a day easy (incl 2hr on with VZ and screen on) , and gone up to two - but then I don't use it as a game machine or music box - - but I have added most application to the auto-end-list in task manager , this way they shut down - which reduces un-needed web, WIFI , GPS etc usage, and my screen clicks off after two minutes
I watch people every day with their screen on 'full time' (power hog) trying to use it as an MP3 player - BTW how long does a battery go on an Ipod ? -
The smart-app app is useful and is a step in the right direction , but I find it still way short of what it needs to do -- guess what I actually want my family to be able to call me 24/7 - thats why I have a cellphone - but my customers & bar buddies - nope -- similar issues with the rest of the app
I don't know what people expect, but it's not a perpetual energy device & a portable charger (external battery backup) is $39.95 (or so is what I paid - but haven't needed)
your task Manager (in the included apps) as well as manage apps in the menu will tell you this info -- putting apps that don't need to run in the background - which is most - except maybe navigate - onto the auto-end-list in the task manager and having a timeout for your screen will shut those powerusers down more frequently and automatically - I go 20 - 40 hrs , but then use it for phone, msg, e-mail, field necessary browsing (at home it's the PC), maps and not for games and music (thats what they make other toys for)
Haha! That's great, Nonna! I like your attitude!
This is my first Android device and I had to keep reminding myself to use the Menu button when I couldn't find what I was expecting! But I really like it now that I've had a bit of time to adjust.
@MrOpinion, I agree a portable battery charger is a nice option. There are a number of different models depending on your needs out there. I also have a charger in my car. But unless I'm streaming a lot I don't find battery life to be a problem. I routinely go 12 hrs and even then am only down to 35-40% with a fair bit of use. Not a big fan of task killers for the reasons in this article, but if what you're doing works for you that's all that matters.
This is my first Droid and was discourage by the battery life also. My son downloaded "Easy Battery Saver+Task Killer". Now I get close to twice the battery life compared to before.
Interesting article. & reasonably logical with a twist where I head off. For one I am not using a task killer and while many apps just sit dormant others such a camera do not. But my thing isnt so much the apps themselves but the external recources they may be - and i may totaly be wrong- keeping active. WI-FI. GPS. BROADBAND BLUETOOTH. and I kind of based that on people constantly telling me how I should turn these off as the kill battery. And I was thinking no app no GPS. and I have gone 48hrs till cut of - so figgured must be workin. usually its 24 w - like you. 30% remaining. only used backup bat once and that was on my dumb-phone just so the backup got cycled. havent needed it on Razr yet

just got the razr.it came with about 70% battery.i killed it in about 3 hours just trying to set up the phone.i let it drain almost completely like recommended then got juice defender.the second day with heavy use (no games just setting up) i got 8 hours and battery down to 20%.i also notice that the new update 6.2 i believe, has lessen the battery use of my screen display which was using 65% of the battery before the update, then 32 after the update.now am not sure if juice defender did that or the update.i will keep draining the battery to almost 0 to keep improving it.also i got my razr in costco and it was 259 and it came with a back up rechargeable battery that last 4 hours and a hdmi out cable.also i get 90 days to exchange for another phone with out a restocking fee.
I'm glad your battery life is improving. I think the update helped some, but JD is probably responsible for the biggest increase. Easy to test it by disabling JD and seeing.
I would not run your battery down like that. It does not improve Lithium Ion batteries - it actually hurts them. FoxKat has written much about it as has the Battery University site. They do not have memory like the old type batteries and their life is shortened by high heat, so frequent smaller charges are actually better.
I just purchased my razor n i really love this phone! the only problem is that the battery dont las hardly nothing i have to charge it like 4 or more times a day, n i havent really been able to explore it because of that, i hardly even use it because by the time im going through it, it starts beeping on me, that the battery is low ,im thinking of getting something else befor its to late : ( im gonna try JD in a bit n see how that works out, thanks to all for the suggestions they are very helpful!
i just got my Razr 4 days ago and on the first day 70% battery drained in 3 hours.and i was just trying to set up my phone. i drained it 2 days to recondition the battery. set my screen to 30 seconds.set up juice deffender.updated the phone to 6.1 . turned off 4g.turn off wifi on the road.turned off maps and gps.now my battery last me for 2 days.thats with light use(some gaming, web, and setting up phone ).battery use on the main screen was 65 % now its 32 %.love the Razr so far.
What do you mean you updated the phone to 6.1? Updated what?
Thanks for your help!!
that 6.1 update became available when i first picked up the phone about 5 or six days ago.the lady who sold me the Razr also had a Razr and was waiting for reviews before upgrading because her phone was working perfect.
It’s a really great site you have here. Thank you for the effort to be so good for us (even though we don`t deserve it) and keep it up.

Wow this poor thread just got all sorts of walked on. I'm just going to do a blanket post and hope I cover all the replies I had in mind.
List Running Apps:To see the running (i.e. currently loaded in RAM and requesting CPU cycles)applications do this:
From any Home screen tap Menu>>Manage Apps Once in the App Manager, tap on the far right-hand Tab labeled 'Running'
Smart Actions: This is a very robust app, if you dig into it you'll find it does an amazing number of things. Automatically. For purposes of energy saving I created some custom actions - one automatically connects to any of my memorized WLAN's. Another, when it senses that WLAN is connected, disables the 4G radio - this does NOT stop SMS or phone calls. Yet another says 'Whenever I'm charging I must be at a location where there is a memorized WLAN, so connect to it"
Do you see the chain here? Everything leads back to shutting down my 4G when I don't need it Frankly, if I'm in my office @ work, I don't need 4g so why let it chew my battery? If I'm at home or a friends where there are memorized WLAN's, similarly, why do I need 4G? WLAN is a much better consumer of your battery's finite life expectancy.
Juice Defender: JD worked very well on my DroidX and transient Bionic - however on the Razr I've not seen an appreciable increase in battery life. I'm not against it and certainly YMMV so if it works for you, use it. I would not however pay for it, there isn't enough difference in the Free vs. Paid versions to make it worthwhile for the avg user. JD and Smart Actions together make up the Ultimate version of JD.Again, YMMV, if ya' want it, buy it.
Auto-Killing Apps: I would be very cautious here. If you are a first time owner of a smart phone, how do you know what to kill? This is #9 for me (PPC-6700, Sch-i760, Omnia, Omnia II, OG Droid, Droid Incredible, DoidX, DroidX2, Droid Bionic and finally this little jewel known as the Razr) AND I'm a Network Engineer(with 21 years experience) - but I don't usually mess with auto-killing apps or automatic task managers. You've heard of the Law of Unintended Consequences, right? You simply should not have to auto-kill applications on a GB based Android - the manufacturer(Motorola)and vendor(Verizon) aren't going to intentiionally set the device up to fail - yes they often make mistakes but there are usually specific fixes for those. Blindly killing everything you see running in the Running Apps list is NOT a good choice (IMHO).
Defective Devices:?
Some of you may well have a defective device - that does happen. Happened to me with my first Incredible(IMO the most aptly named smartphone ever!)and happened to me with the Bionic, faulty devices do slip through. I wold pursue that angle if you recently got the device - if you are past your NQA warranty return then you may well end up with a refurb phone but as long as it functions, right?
the incredible was TRULY incredible. that was my first smartphone and it blew my mind.
i'm no expert and this is all just my opinion, but smashogre's post is spot on. no task killer for me. period. use wifi at home and the office. only enable 4g/LTE when i'm streaming video or downloading large files and wifi isn't available. i use an app called timeriffic (that sounds similar to smart actions). i can use the app to automatically turn wifi on when i get home and off when i leave.....and then the same when i come and go from the office. it also disables all radios at 1 am and turns them back on at 6 am (my wife is the only possible person that would need to get a hold of me in the middle of the night and since she is next to me, i simply don't need the radios draining the battery all night/morning). i have the tbolt with the rezound's battery (1620mah) and it is a battery hog....but i EASILY get a full day on one charge and consider myself a fairly heavy user.
i haven't seen in this thread any discussion about actual use time. if you really want to guage the battery life, you should start checking the "uptime" and the "actual or real uptime." i'm not familiar with the razor, but with most most devices, you can check out the uptime (the amount of time that you have actually been using the device) and the awake time or real uptime (the actual amount of time it has been turned on since the last time you powered down or rebooted). i charge my device completely and then immediately reboot it. i will get right around 3 hours (a bit more) of real uptime (actual use) and 20-30 hours of idle/uptime/standby.....whatever you want to call it.
of course, if i turn it on and immediatley stream a movie that's 2 hours long, then i will have a real hard time getting through the day so it depends on how you use your device. my point is that if you are an average user that texts, calls, browses, etc, etc randomly throughout the day, then you should expect to get about 3 hours of that actual use and should have enough battery for it to idle the rest of the day. (elixir has a nice battery stat part to the app. it also is a great app in general).
