Connecting Razr Maxx to GM Radio via USB

I just got my Razr Maxx and would like to play the music on it over the GM radio in my 2011 Silverado via the USB connection.  All I get from the various connection options are "unrecognized device" on the radio.  Any ideas?

This would be the Best way to Go an it includes the Cable that can go to the impute Jack in your Truck. We have a 2011 truck as Well an Extended Cab with the Same plug witch is just below the Stereo.

Here's a View of the Car Dock an it Does have a Audio Cable to were you can Plug into you Car Audio. Car Charger is Excluded with Kit ! b33

Navigation Window Mount

  • DROID RAZR MAXX vehicle dock
  • Windshield and dashboard mount
  • 5ft audio cable
  • quick start guide

You will also need a Car Charger that are sold separately to Go with it But with Kit you you can play your Music

Since your gonna need a good Charger to go with it i would like to Suggest one of these

Here are three Great Chargers From MOTOROLA  that you can use in Conjunction with the Vehicle Dock

  1. P513 Car Charger (Micro USB) - 89143N
  2. P617 Universal Vehicle Power Adapter
  3. Vehicle Power Adapter For Tablets and Phones

Hello wlhump...

I've having the same difficulty with my 2010 Chevy Traverse.  I have tried the different USB settings on the phone (USB Mass Storage is SUPPOSED to be the one).  I was able to get it to work ONCE, but I have tried so many different combinations of settings (such as in USB mode, turn phone on first, then ignition, etc etc) I cannot get it to work again.  I even tried different USB cables.

Amazon.com sells the car dock that comes with all cabling (USB cables, 1/8 to 1/8 audio cables, dual charging ports, etc) so nothing else to buy.  I've ordered mine, should be here next week.  I just hope I can find the right combination of settings to make it work thru USB port, for the best sound.

Instead of trying to use a USB Cable an USB Jack.  Use the Cable that comes with the Kit i showed!!  it goes directly out of the phone an into the Stereo Aux Jack on the Traverse or Any new Gm Vehicle. b33

Thanks for your fast reply. The stereo audio cable is an option I have used, and it works ok.  The reason I want to use USB cabling is:

     -its a digital signal

-it will charge the phone at the same time

-I can tuck the cable into a channel that runs into the center console where the USB jack is, so no wires are seen

-and best yet, I can change the songs, (next, back, change artists etc) from the controls on the steering wheel.

I have experience similar issues with some radios, it seems that either the manufacture are not using a universal data port connection and due to the differences it can be a hit and miss situation on which will and wont work..  Since my Kenwood has bluetooth feature I use that feature but like you reported the usb gives a digital quality sound.

Out of curiosity does the error show on device or car stereo when plugged in and also have you checked for any firmware updates for car stereo, so manufactures allows this?

Wildman i like what the Motorola SJ1652A kit an what it has to Offer but what i don't really care fore is that there are Only few ways to Acquire it 1. by Amazon 2. Motorola Store 3. Sears.  Verizon has the Dock it self just the Dock but why they don't carry the full Kit is Beyond me an it as said it's a Good Kit with allot of good stuff in it..b33

The errors always show on the car stereo screen.  I phone itself thinks its connected by whatever USB mode is chosen (it doesn't get any "feedback" from the radio that its not working.)

I just got done trying different microSD cards I had laying around from old phones. I even re-formatted one microSD card on the computer, thinking it was something to do with the way the phone formats the card. No-go. The thumb drive which works great in the stereo had been formatted the same way, on the same computer.  So I don't understand the difference between a thumb drive (which is just a memory chip) and a microSD card.  They are both just memory chips, or so I thought.

If it never worked, I would just give up and be done with it.  But it DID work once, so now I'm determined to make it work again.  My HTC Incredible worked with the USB input, but was cumbersome to do so.

The USB is more of a direct connection but the devices sd card is being access through the OS communication method.

Consider it like placing the sd card in a card reader instead of plugging in directly.

The radio could have correct driver to read card but not the correct one to read the method the phone communicates the data.

It says in some of the GM Vehicle Brochures we have that MP3 or Music Loaded Flash Drives will Work:  But it takes a Specific kind of Bit-Rate to make them work just Right Doesn't it Wildman..

Well in the Cheap but not Cheap Truck that we got it only has the 3.5 plug In it an that's my only Option Wildman. And i just wished that Kit Pack was Available threw Verizon stores as well instead of just buying a Mount Suction Cut an 3.5 Chord..b33 Smiley Sad

The radio in my Traverse is the Bose Navigation unit.  The owners manual does give some detailed information for the USB criteria, but I don't know where else to turn. It says

USB Supported File and Folder Structure

The radio supports:

Up to 700 folders.

Up to 8 folders in depth.

Up to 65,535 files.

Folder and file names up to 64 bytes.

Files with an .mp3 or .wma file extension.

AAC files stored on an iPod.

FAT16

FAT32

Isn't FAT16 and FAT32 a type of disk formatting?  I wonder if that has something to do with it.

  • Fat16 amd 32 is a disk format and you sd card should be Fat16 if I remember so you should be good there
  • I see that the structure is limited to 8 Folders, where do you have the mp3 files stored?  From the SD Card directory how many folders do youo have to open before you can see the mp3 files?
  • I do not see you exceeding the maximium 700 folders on your sd card so I think this isnt the issue.

I believe you may can test this by coping all folders to your pc and only create a My Music folder and place files into this folder and see it it reads the files and play them, if they do then you have exceeded one of these listed restrictions.

Thanks for your reply Wildman.

I have tried copying .mp3 files to the root directory and several other folders as well.  At one point yesterday, the radio actually displayed "no files found", which means it must have at least connected, but for some reason couldn't locate a file.

Interestingly, I have tried multiple USB cables, and found that some (from HTC phone and Acer tablet) will only charge, not allowing data flow at all.  I would have thought they'd all be the same.

I have just emailed GM tech support with this delimna, asking if there's possibly a firmware update for the stereo.  I'm not holding my breath for an answer,

When you moves the files to the root of the card was that the only thing on the card because the other folder structures on the card may be going against the required card restrictions for the radio?

Another thing you can try is if you have a usb card reader, remove the card from phone and place it in the reader and then see if the radio reads it.

Now that's the system I wish we had in our truck that is 1 heck of a system. Our system can kick some b*** but that system sounds even Better. We had a salesman give us a demonstration. And it blew us away on the sound of puts out.
