DROID Razr MAXX HD unmounting SD card issue

Hi,

I have a Droid Razr Maxx HD purchased earlier this year. I have been using a Samsung 32GB class 2 card that I had from a previous device and it has been working fine up until about a week after the 9.18.79.xt926 software update. My phone now does not recognize any data that was on my SD card. I understand the other posts about trying a different card, or a higher card class, but this is the first time I received this issue. I have restarted my phone and removed the SIM/SD several times and it didn't resolve the issue; however, every time I replace the SD card, the phone goes through the usual recognition process of an SD card and upon completion states "SD card is ready to be removed" or something along those lines. Has anyone else had this issue or a similar one? Is someone able to help me?

I too have am experiencing a similar issue since the last update. have a Droid Razr Maxx and occasionally (often) get a message "SD card unexpectedly removed" even though it is there. Sometimes a reboot will fix but when listening to music (stored on SD) the player will suddenly stop and I get the same message. Re seating card will sometimes fix sometimes not but it keeps reoccurring. May be a trip to the Verizon store soon.

Jake-V and BubbaX, thank you for your post and we can certainly get to the bottom of the issue. Have you tried your SD card in any other devices like a phone, camera or computer since this issue started? If not, please do so to test. Jake, after removing and inserting the card, are you able to view data from the card or do you get that message right away again?

I have not tried testing the card in another device (at least not one since I initially switched phones and used the same SD card.) After removing and reinserting the card I get the usual "Preparing SD Card" message and then I immediately get the message of "SD Card safe to remove." During this entire process I am not able to view any data on the card.

Your Maxx HD might have Formatted the Card when you installed it Into it.. Possibly! If you have an card Adapter insert your Micro SD into the Adapter and then insert it in a Card Reader on your Computer see if your Contents show up on your Computer if they are there) They haven't been Formatted if there not showing up on your Computer more in Likely your Maxx Formatted the Card..

There is nothing wrong with the card. In fact, I can see the contents (mostly music) until I get the message that “SD card unexpectedly removed” but I have not removed the card! Then I look later and the contents are there. I discovered the problem while listening to music (while doing yard work) and suddenly the player stops and I see the message. This behavior seems to have started after my last system update.

Thanks for checking this information! Is the error appearing on particular songs? Where was this music downloaded from? Can you delete the song, then download the song? I think the music file maybe corrupted. The next step would be a Hard Reset http://vz.to/tQ0nkT on the device to repair any software that did not restore properly after the update. Keep me posted.

The error occurs randomly. The music was copied from my music library on my home PC. I have not tried a Hard Reset as you describe. I did not have this issue until after the last system update.

I will a Hard Reset if the problem continues….

I have the exact same problem. I got an update pushed onto my phone a few days ago. I no longer have access to the SD card data. The SD card is labelled Verizon - it came with the phone. The error message I get says "SD card unexpectedly removed. Unmount SD card before removing." I tried reseating the card with no luck.

Are you sure you are checking the SD card and not the SIM card. I may be wrong, but I don't remember the SD card which came with my Razr Maxx HD as having been labeled Verizon. I do know the SIM card is labeled Verizon, though.

Hi rcschnoor -- Thanks for responding to my issue. You were spot on. It turns out that I reseated the incorrect card. This time I reseated the SD card (labelled MicroSD HC 8GB, installed by Verizon when I bought the phone). Unfortunately the phone still gives me the same error.

Have you tried a different card? I had this problem with an SD card once. I tried a different card and it worked fine. I actually prefer a card with more capacity than 8 GB and have a 32 GB card in my Razr Maxx HD.

I have the EXACT same issue (phone starts up, says "Preparing SD Card", the card works for a few seconds, then the message "SD card unexpectedly removed. Unmount SD card before removing." comes up and the SD card no longer works. I also started seeing the issue immediately after the last software update.

I have tried the SD card in a PC and it works fine. In my old Droid 2 global and it works fine. In my Droid Razr HD, it fails exactly the same way that Pdx_Ben described. Everything was working fine until the last software push that I received from Verizon. Immediately after that, I started experiencing the problem. Literally, the problem occurred on the first boot after the update. This is NOT an SD card problem. There is something amiss in the software update that came out recently. Any help from Verizon on this issue would be GREATLY appreciated by many!!

Thanks for confirming that I'm not wacko paleale77! I have been traveling and have not had time to purchase a new SD card.

Same issue here after the update. I put my 32GB class 10 microSD into my old device and it works just fine. I copied all of the data from it and I'm currently running a low level format on it....it's half done. Afterwards, if it doesn't work when I copy some data back to it and re-insert it into my Razr Maxx HD, I'll be asking for my 3rd replacement Razr in 2 weeks!!!

IT WORKED! So far, so good. I'll update this thread in a few days to confirm if the issue has been resolved by formatting the card.

OK, so i finally was able to get around to getting a micro SD to regular SD adapter and I tried out the original card in another device and there was no data on it. I bought a new card, put it in and it works fine. I still think it was something with that previous update that caused my card to format itself, but regardless, I had already backed up my data prior to the incident and this new card seems to work fine.

I get the same error and do not have a SD card installed, so please explain that. And it only started after the last update.

It sounds like I need to install one just to rid myself of this Verizon code issue.

I have same issue with razr m since the last update. the card works fine and then for no reason it unmounts itself. internittent Pain.

I had the exact same issue with my Droid Razr M. The SD card is only 6 months old and I knew it was not likely that it had already reached the end of it's lifespan. I do have a strong background in IT so i started trouble shooting. I removed the card and inserted it into my laptop using the adapter case. Next I copied all files over to a directory on my laptop, since I used xcopy on Win 7, I had set the flags to not report errors and skip files that were bad. I then used WinMerge to compare the copied files in the directory to the originals on the SD card. I found only one file did not copy, it was a .gif format with a .jpg extension. It would not even open on the laptop. I then formatted the SD card, copied the entirety of the directory back to the SD card, mounted it, and have had absolutely no problems with randomly unmounting itself since. I admit I do not know the Android OS as well as I do many others, but it appears that the contradiction between the format and the extension may have been causing the issue. My advice is to try copying the contents of the SD card over and if any errors are flagged you will have the option, at least on Windows, to 'Try Again', 'Skip', or 'Cancel', attempt 'Try Again' and if it still hangs just 'Skip' the file and allow it to continue. If possible try to retrieve the skipped files, but in either case format the card, return the contents, and remount the card. I hope this helps at least some of those out there with this very annoying situation. Good Luck!

Has there been any resolution on this, I am experiencing the same issue. Appears to start up fine shows preparing SD card and I can view total and available space under "storage" then I receive the message moments later "SD Card unexpectedly removed" I will try mounting on my old device and see if it works.

I have the exact same issue. Except mine sometimes says SIM card unexpectedly removed, and sometimes says Please insert SD card.

It will do this randomly. Mid-call. Sometimes when it's just sitting on a shelf. Sometimes when I first boot up the phone and nothing is running. Sometimes it doesn't do it for a week. Then one day it won't stay mounted for more than 5 minutes.

I've checked software update, I've put the SD card in a computer to see if can be read (it can be). Please help.

Help is here! I know how important the information on a memory card can be. First, since you mentioned that the data can be read on a computer, please save it there, if you haven't already. Second, I'd like to ask you a couple of questions. Have you tried a different SD card to see if you get the same error? You can use an SD card from another phone (I'm just saying that because I don't expect you to buy another SD card in order to troubleshoot this), so you can see if the error cotinues. If it doesn't, then you know the SD card is corrupted or just in need of a replacement.

I would suggest saving the data on your PC, then format the card. Once that's done, place the card back in the device and see if it continues.

The important thing is that you are able to save the pictures and data to your computer, so you don't lose those memories. Keep me posted, thanks!

My problem is very similar but it only happens after I plug in my phone to any charger. SD card unexpectedly removed (Unmount SD card before removing to avoid damage to SD card). Has anyone had this problem?

Verizon Support - Please quit saying it is the SD card..."try the SD card somewhere else". I'm having all the same issues posted below. At the moment, my phone will not mount or "see" an SD card at all. I've tried several different cards. It's a phone hardware problem or software problem. Please address it from that perspective. This has been a continous problem with my RAZRMaxx HD.

Nothing you posted below addresses the problem.

I'm with you tony165. My wife's Droid Razr M got a brand new shiny 16GB card when I bought it and it was set up as the default storage for several apps. She's not what you call electronics oriented so I periodically had to pull off all the photos and vids she made to keep the card from filling up. This time I saw that the phone showed there was an unmounted SD card installed at all which was unpleasant since it had never been unmounted. Tried to mount it while in the phone but no joy there. Couldn't format it either of course. Took it out and stuck in a WORKING 8GB card and the same happened. After I formatted the 8GB on a computer it now works on the phone but the 16GB card won't format now on any computer. I also think the update botched something considering all the users that complained about SD card malfunctions at that time. Thanks to Verizon for probably killing my 16GB SD card and anything on it.

I'm sure there are a certain % of users that had real SD card failures but there are too many similar problems that seem to focus around the phone update to "fix" SD card problems.

Add yet another one. I noticed a week or so back that I was getting the same intermittent error on the SD card. The card itself works fine in any other device I put it on and I can easily read it on the computer in just a reader. I have a charging port issue (second time with a DROID), and took it into a Verizon store this past weekend. The sales associate took one look and said, "you need a new SD card." Now I am wondering if that is actually the issue.

I have a Droid Razr M. I too started experiencing this problem with my SD card not being recognized. I never had this problem until right after I uploaded my files from my phone to the Verizon Cloud. Within a few minutes of the upload, the phone would not recognize the card. After restarting the phone and taking out the card, it would read files on the card for a few minutes, but then would have the same error message pop up saying card was unmounted. Not quite sure why this is happening.

I know how convenient it is to use my SD card skankr! Have you tested the card in another device? How about a different card in the handset? Verizon cloud should definitely not have an affect on the device or the card.

Yep...I have the same problem with a 16GB PNY sd card. When I first got the card, and installed it, everything worked great...for a few months. But now it is not working. When I first boot up the phone (after shutting it down), the message "preparing SD card" appears. I can surf to the SD card from my PC (via USB), and I can see files from the phone itself. Then, within less than a minute or so, the error message shows up "SD card unexpectedly removed". It started about three months ago, when I was taking a lot of pictures and storing them on the SD card. Out of the blue one day, I got the error message and couldn't access the card. After several attempts, I was able to (via USB cable) download all the files to my PC, but the phone is still giving me the "unexpectedly removed" message after being on for 30 secs or so. In the few seconds that it was recognized, I did go in and "erased all files", which I guess is formatting, or that's what Verizon's instructions say. It had zero effect on the issue.

My phone is a Razr M, Android ver 4.1.2, 98.18.94.XT907

This issue appears to be pervasive, and extremely common...just do a quick Google search, or search these forums. I can't imagine that there are that many bad SD cards out there. It would really be good if Verizon, or someone, could nail this issue and figure out a real fix.

I'm sorry for the issues that you are having with your SD card. We actually only support ScanDisk Ultra Micro SD cards. For this one I would reach out to the manufacturer of your SD card to see if there are any known issues.

I just recieved my third phone from Asurion and all of them are broken in a unique way. Other than the frustrations with Asurion and Verizon's support, I'm getting the same error as mentioned above on the most recent phone that was sent to me. My SD card is giving the same "SD card unexpectedly removed" error immediately upon boot up, just after the phone finishes the SD scan. I have a Razr Maxx HD. This is the 3rd maxx HD that I have currently used using the same SD card. the card worked fine in the first two maxx HDs but not this one. The card also worked fine through all version updates of the android system. the card also works in my computer, DSLR camera, and a samsung galaxy S3. this is clearly an issue with this phone (it worked in the previous 2 phones) and not the SD card.

what is the solution? I haven't been happy with Verizon, Asurion, or the Maxx HD. I pay the monthly insurance to Verizon and I've paid the $100 replacement fee to Asurion and I've had 3 broken phones sent to me and it's been a month of tech calls, replacement phones, more calls, checking forums, etc. this is unacceptable and I need a solution.

Have you tried connecting the SD card to the computer move everything except the cache and Android folders. Then using the device to format the Sim card and finally putting everything back on the sdcard? It could be corrupted cache.

Do you have the most recent software update? What software version are you running? Have you tried using a different SD card? Do you see the error message during certain functions or when accessing any particular application? How often are you getting this error message?

I've had this same problem off and on for a Droid MAXX I bought in April. I've seen no explanation for the random unmounting problem elsewhere on the internet and find this particular thread to be maddeningly unhelpful. Obviously a number of Verizon customers like me have encountered this problem yet all the customer service reps can do is blame the SD card. Ridiculous.

New update. I stopped at a Verizon store (different one). The associate told me this is a known issue and it is a problem with the RAZR phones of this vintage and I should get another one. Now here comes the fun part. Since it is just over a year old i am not eligible for a replacement and would have to pay $100 to my phone insurance company for a new one. This trouble was first reported to Verizon way before the year was up. The last time I called them they told me they could not talk to me because my PIN was wrong. At this store I found out my PIN is fine. Anyone with a year or older RAZR needs to get it replaced to fix this issue.

After reading this post and scouring all the different forums I could find with threads pertaining to this issue, I am fully convinced it is related to a certain OTA update. I have had this issue for a few months now and prior to the update in I believe September, I never had an issue. I can use the SD card in the computer without any problems. I'd like to know if there is a way to rollback to the previous version. I know it cannot be done by the consumer, but can Verizon techs in the store do it?

I have had this issue for a year. Verizon told me to call Motorola as the sd door has issues and causes the problem. Called Motorola, to bad we are aware of the issue have Verizon replace it. Verizon will not replace or fix the known issue or you can spend extra to upgrade to another model when this is a known hardware issue. What a run around.

Motorola caused the issue, and it's their product. Verizon isn't liable to fix it, and Motorola is. If you don't believe me take that to court and watch how fast Verizon get's cleared and you'll be up against Motorola through the long haul.

My problems with the SD card being unexpectantly removed started when I changed from a more rigid protector case to a case that had rubberized sides. The SD card door was visably pushed out by the spring action of the SD card port. The original case I was using was apparently snug enouch to keep it closed. I tried a bit of tape to keep it closed and that worked for a few days. Another post about this problem made me realize that the SD card must be seated BEFORE installing the SIM tray. If the SD card does not click into the port, the spring action will push against the SIM tray resulting in intermitant contact. This resolved my issue; I no longer need to tape the sim tray shut.

I do not see how an update could have caused this issue; I think it was coincidental.
