You should check the community for similar discussions to see if there is any suggestions you can try. One recent thread is MDNSD draining battery droid mini.

I've already done that. The only suggestions I've seen are for those who have Firefox or Freeflight installed on their phone. I've never had either installed. Hoping someone can offer additional suggestions.

Having ample battery life is key. I definitely want to make sure that you have a charge you can rely on. How long have you noticed your battery life draining? You mentioned this is a result of the mdnsd process, where are you seeing that in your device? When this first started happening do you remember making any changes to your device (new software update, new applications, etc)?

I've seen it appear after the phone has been on for about 6 to 8 hours. I'm attaching a screenshot of what it looks at this moment.

I just did a factory reset 2 days ago, so I've tried everything that other discussion threads have suggested. The problem simply won't go away.

Here is the screen shot that I had tried to attach earlier. MDNSD is now 2nd from the top, with Screen at a slightly higher value.

Here's two screen shots that show the results of using the "Run health check" tool at the site you recommended. I've added a third screen shot of how my phone's "Battery Saver" looks after 6 hours of use. Note that mdnsd is the top of the list, and if you could feel the phone you could tell it's running warmer than normal. If I power off and on the phone mdnsd will disappear off of the list for about half of the day.

You should dig deeper into the two items that found issues.

I did.

The "App from unknown sources" is a simple solitaire game that I've had installed for longer than the problem has been occurring. The "Applications with more access" is just about every app on the phone. Facebook, Verizon Video, Navigation, Photos, etc.

After I did a factory reset I noticed that mdnsd started to appear even before I re-installed the extra apps that I use. This leaves me with the following conclusion:

THERE'S A BUG IN ANDROID.

Now, how does one go about getting this fixed?

Purchase a device with a newer version of the OS? The Droid Maxx is very likely already at the end of life for software support. If it gets another security update, I would be shocked.

Ann154 had suggested that I start my phone in "Safe Mode" and see if the problem reoccurred. Here is a screen shot of the result. (Note: I had to trim the center of the screenshot so you could see top and bottom.) As you can see, it was in "Safe Mode" for 15 hours. I checked on it periodically throughout the day. After about 10 hours mdnsd hit the list. For the next 5 hours it kept creeping higher in the rankings.

I'm not sure what you're recommending. I've seen the "Apps" section before. The mdnsd app/module never appears in that list. I've never been able to correlate which of the running apps may be calling the mdnsd app/module.

It would have been better if you hadn't trimmed the screenshot so a more full picture of what is using the battery could be formed. What I also haven't seen is how often the various radios are active and you can get that information by touching the battery graph to view the radio usage screen.

And 15+ hrs on battery and still have 48% remaining is a great battery life.

I haven't heard anything back regarding my request to find an alternative way to provide the information you need to troubleshoot without sharing my account password over unsecured means. Have we reached an impasse?

I found something that works for me that might be worth trying. (I have a Note 3, which started having the same battery draining mdnsd issue a few weeks ago. I have been following multiple threads trying to find a resolution and figured out the following solution a week and a half ago that continues to work for me as I wanted to thoroughly test what seemed to be working before posting.)

Before unplugging the phone from the power cord, turn it off and then turn it back on but leave it plugged in for another 5 minutes before removing. (It didn't matter whether I charged the phone to 100% or just 25%.) When I do this, the mdnsd no longer shows in the list of items using up the battery. Better yet, the battery is lasting nearly as long as it used to when the phone was brand new so I've been pleasantly surprised.

I hope this works for you as well.

If you can try disabling those apps. I have the Maxx 2 and there are a bunch of apps that were draining my battery as well. Disabling these apps helped keep some of my battery life.

Did anyone get a resolution on this? I've been having his exact same issue the last few weeks. I chalked it up to my phone getting old but the more I read the more I think some app is causing this. Also using a droid Maxx.

I just had this issue start yesterday after an Android update (Galaxy Note 3, baseband version N900VVRSEPL1). Could that have something to do with it?

Possibly, but based on my troubleshooting I've come to the conclusion that this is an Android bug that Verizon refuses to pursue. Their only recommendation is to buy a new phone.

The MDNSD functions are used by Androids frequentlly in many applications from multiple smartphone manufacturers on every network provider, and is programmed by Google who developed the operating systems. Reaching out to any of the wireless carriers regarding such an issue doesn't seem to be the most effective way to determine the exact cause or resolution vs. the software developer.

While newer Androids also use MDNSD one thing I've noticed is that those reporting the issue tend to have phones that are several years old, and have tried many different ways of fixing it except for replacing the battery. It's likely that after several years, multiple charging cycles, and element exposure a new battery could help since it would have full charging capacity vs the old degraded/reduced capacity battery. (New batteries would also be cheaper than buying a new phone).

I'm having the same issue with my droid, just popped up today. Drained my battery in about 2 hours. Honestly there's so much [Removed] on the phone that I didn't install and don't know if it's important to the actual phone use or not I've no idea what to do about it. Really tired of all the apps that are just automatically put on the phone and updated with no way to uninstall them or know if they're essential or not.

AYLA1209, we want you to have the best experience possible on your device. You mentioned that you recently updated the software update on your phone. Do you have 3rd party applications downloaded on your phone? If so, did you update the software for those applications, as well? Updating the application software will improve the performance of your device. Additionally, it would also be helpful to delete any unwanted applications in Settings>Application>Application Manager>tap the application and select uninstall.

Lastly, power your device off/on. Keep us posted and let us know if those issues persist after following the steps provided above.

Reposting a solution from January 8th. This worked for two phones from my account that mdnsd was killing my battery and performance...You will be all fixed in 5 minutes!

MDNSD appeared out of nowhere on my droid maxx, also after researching an upgrade and new phone on verizon. I did not have Firefox or Freeflight. I have done factory reset three times. It keeps returning with significant battery drain in all modes (25-27%). I have now removed firefox from my PC, as well. I cannot seemed to find a solution for this and it seems malicious. Help, please!

MDNSD has appeared uninvited on my MAXX twice now and both times it got very hot and drained the battery in less than 12 hours. I do not have Firefox or Freeflight apps. I have narrowed it down to two apps, one of which seems to be the primary culprit: updates to Google Play Services. The MDNSD issue has occurred after both most recent updates. Tried the power off, charge, restart solution with no luck. Very frustrated.

Now the mdnsd is up to using 38% of my battery. I cannot determine which app this process is linked. Situation is getting worse with this. Please do something substantive, Verizon.

I found I still had the battery drain problem even in safe mode that led me to think it's not an app. I tried what someone suggested, plugged the phone in to charge, turned it off and waited 5 minutes. Then unplugged it and turned it back on. No more mdnsd but now there are several Android icons showing under battery use. Fortunately they aren't using as much battery as the mdnsd.

I am running a droid ultra. This problem showed up a couple of weeks ago, and after trial and error, my problem was the Facebook app. I doubt they are going to solve this problem , so for now I will be sans Facebook via the app.

No way!!! Good information. I will keep an closer eye on FB. I wonder if it has to do with their tie in to the phone’s GPS service to capture the I AM HERE location posts? I also wonder if FB turns on the GPS link every time their app downloads a software update!

I've been having the same issue. I've noticed it happens every time I download a new app. I end up deleting the new app(s) then turning the phone off and charging while off. Once it goes away it doesn't come back until a new app is downloaded... never the same app twice.

I have a note 4. I have this same problem. I have uninstalled firefox. I have installed the package disabler for Samsung because you cannot uninstall facebook on this phone, which is [Removed] ! I have tried all kinds of service disablers. Nothing works!

The problem is:

The MDNSD service is the number one on the battery page. It is sometimes as high as 46%. It runs the battery down very quickly. Sometimes it runs it down and heats up the battery so badly, even with it hooked to a quick charger, it runs the battery down while using it.

This problem only started six months ago. What is the deal? It doesn't always do this. I can go 5 or 6 days without a problem. Then it shows up on the battery page, and my battery goes down fast. I have googled the heck out of this and can only find that facebook and firefox are the problem. That is not it. I am getting really mad because it is not my fault. This phone has been great for 2 years. I refuse to buy another phone just to fix this! I will go to a flipphone if I have to. They always do this. They find some way to make you have to buy a new phone. [Removed]!

I thought I would follow up with what I did. I couldn't uninstall facebook as it is a built in app. I could however uninstall facebook updates. I did that and it solved the problem! No more mdnsd in the battery page. I am using an old version of the facebook app but it does the job fine for me. My battery has over 50% at the end of the day. Happy camper here.
