Droid RAZR battery issues

I am having major battery issues now with my Razr. Let me explain some of the things I've observed.
Number 1. When discharging it might drop to 99-98-97-80-40-39-38-20-4% as I witnessed today, right before my eyes while using it in a matter of a few minutes, and it gets hot too. When charging, it will charge up normally to around 30%, then jumps to 100 and says charged.
Number 2. This seems to be a much bigger problem when using 4G. I just recently got 4G here, and ever since then, my phone is always a little warm and just eats the battery. I'd noticed this before, when traveling from here when it was still just 3G, to a 4G area. It is such a problem that when I went to Florida this past summer, I had to stop at the verizon store for them to check it out, because it was dying way more rapid than I was used to, always being on 3G at home.
My phone is so bad now, that I dropped it from 100 to 4% in around an hour yesterday, and about 50+ minutes of that was idle and screen off. Then again later, I was using it to check the weather and it again went from 80+% to 15%, and quickly dropped to 9% in a matter of moments.

I have changed nothing about it that would cause this level of drain. Location and everything else is off. I checked to see what is using the battery the second time it happened, and is says it is mostly screen and android OS.

Most likely the battery, but just to check, run your phone in SAFE mode for a few hours during charging and use. If your battery still charges and drains erratically, then it's probably the battery. How old is your phone? If less than a year get a warranty replacement. If older than a year you can have the battery replaced by Motorola for fee or buy a new or used phone. Mororola just reduced the price of their no contract Moto X to $399 for 16GB and $449 for 32GB.

My daughter has had the exact same problem. It worked fine since end of July when we got it as her regular two year upgrade plan until about a month ago. She hasn't added any new apps and hasn't changed her phone behavior. She does all the right things with turning off wifi and I've done the cache partition wipe twice and it sill does it. It gets so hot that the phone actually exhibits a warning message that it needs to shut down. And it happens almost daily now. I've checked what's been using battery and Google Services seems to be the main culprit--with Google Play services and Location services using almost as much battery as the screen. I've also uninstalled updates to Google Play services, rebooted and installed updates again and the overheating/battery drain still continues. I am planning on taking her phone to Verizon and asking for a replacement.

I've scoured the internet for answers and not sure what to do. Hoping it's a phone issue. It seems ridiculous to have to turn off all the connectivity and functionality of a smartphone just to be able to have it work properly.

Wanted to update my previous post and say I found a potential solution online. I stopped Location reporting and location history under the Google Settings app on the phone. That seems to be the least disruptive fix for now and the phone hasn't had extraordinary Google Services battery drain or heat issues for now. Hope to follow up on this soon.

The fix that I posted on Jan. 7 was short-lived as the phone got very hot today with Google Services tying Android OS in battery use at about 20% each, surpassing the screen battery use as the phone was barely being used. I'm planning on taking it back to Verizon and hoping to get a replacement that doesn't do the same. I've ready posts elsewhere where some Razr M owners have more than one in the household and only one has the issue.

I am having the same battery issues, and just noticed something about the phone itself: it's become THICKER. The battery is GROWING in size, the back of the phone feels squishy ... the bigger it gets, the faster it discharges. That jump from 70% to 20% to 5% is happening more often. My IT guy says this happens to batteries that get hot.

Will Verizon replace my battery in-store? Or do I really have to send it away and lose it for who knows how long??

I own 2 Razr Maxx's and neither of them has done this, they get warm but never so hot that they can't be touched or the batteries start to bulge..

I never saw my daughter's Razr M battery getting bigger but it was definitely overheating badly and more frequently in the past month. During the recent break from school, we took it into a Verizon store and asked for a replacement. (Still under 1-year warranty since we got it July 2013.) She liked the phone and said we'd be happy to get an exact replacement if we knew the heating issue wouldn't come back up and they obliged. Two days later, a Droid Ultra came in the mail as her replacement! I thought it was a mistake as her old SIM card from the RAZR wouldn't even fit the SIM nano spot in the new phone. I called VZW customer service to confirm and they said sometimes they don't have exact models in stock to replace so they send a comparable phone and they said to go to a store to get a new SIM (or they can send one out) to activate it. Got a new SIM card from a Verizon store the next day and activated at home with help from a customer service rep on the phone. The rep at the store was surprised too at what she was sent. I have the Droid Mini and thought that would be the better fit if they were going to get a comparable phone. My kid's totally fine with the exchange/upgrade--though it's a LOT bigger in her hands. I gotta say, even though Verizon charges an arm and a leg, I have been very satisfied with their customer service all around. I was thinking of switching to T-Mobile with their new buyout of ETF plan, but I think I'll stay with Verizon for now.
