What needs to be done so I can see what the screen is displaying while outside?
Have you already adjusted the screen brightness? Settings > Display > Brightness

Dougwig, the sun's violent rays can make reading your phone screen difficult at times. As a result, increasing the brightness may not resolve your issue.
