Group Text Messages Won't Download On My Droid Razr Maxx HD

Many times my Droid Razr Maxx HD will not receive group text messages. Often, not always, when I receive a group text I get a message notification and when I look at the screen it simply says "downloading." This downloading can go on for hours. Two days ago one simple text message took 7 hours to download. This is a recent problem probably only going back 3 weeks or so. The other phones in this group text are two I Phone 5's, an I Phone 5 s and a Samsung Galaxy SIII. My phone is used for business and my inability to receive a text quickly is hurting my business. I may as well not have a cell phone. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

Oh wow toddbike, this certainly doesn't seem normal. Having a working phone, especially for work is always important. While trying to get these messages, are you connected to WiFi? You shouldn't HAVE to, but what can happen is these messages can convert over to "picture messages" if they contain more than 140 characters. Please test on the cellular network and while connected to WiFi and keep us posted on your findings. Thanks.

Erin, it seems to be primarily when I am connected to wifi. But this is a

new problem. In the past I would be connected to wifi and I would get

texts problem free. I would prefer not to eat up my data plan with texts

when a wifi is available! Thanks for your thoughts.

If connected to wifi and in safe mode group text messages still do the

prolonged "downloading" thing which it does not do when not connected to

wifi (they download instanteously.) The default SMS app is set to

"messaging."

I have the same exact problem and it started after the update too. My wife has the same phone and uses the wi-fi too, but her phone receives the text. It sounds like B S that this problem is something that has always been this way since it didn't happen a few weeks back and the fact that my wife's phone is the same phone and it receives the texts that mine is missing. I don't really care about the data plan, but my wi-fi is fast for cruising the internet, and I'm not going to switch my wifi off now that there has been an "update" that doesn't allow for receiving group texts while connected to wifi. I hope some one finds a solution to this. I really don't want to put my family through a carrier change.

Same problem here. My husband and I both have RAZR Maxx HD's and the delayed, and sometimes never received, messages is more than a minor annoyance. We both use our phones for work and personal use and they've become a hindrance since the last Android update. With the amount of repeated reports of the same exact issues you'd think Verizon, Motorola and the Android 'people' would be deligently working to fix the issue. We've been very loyal Verizon customers for 12+ years and this is the first time we've been so frustrated and unhappy with the service we pay so much for. We're not up for an upgrade until 2/2015 so we're hoping for a quick resolution.

I can understand how this can be very upsettings. I want to thank you for the many years of your loyalty. We hope to continue to being your cell phone provider for 12 more years. I depend on my phone and text messages for everything now days! So let's make sure that we get you back up and running. Are you guys using the default text message application that came on the phone, the Verizon Messages, or are you using a 3rd party application from Google Play Store (hangout, handcent, GoSMS Pro)? Do you have any kind of troubles with the data services or phone calls with the phone since the update? Please keep us posted.

Hi Kevin,

I am using the default text application that came with the phone. To be clear about my previous post, the issue occurs when WiFi is on and, under Mobile network settings, the checkbox for "Data enabled" is checked. So I am not disabling network data, merely enabling WiFi. Given that MMS/group texts come over the cellular network even with WiFi enabled then it seems to be an issue after the update that causes MMS/group texts to not download normally via the cellular network when WiFi is enabled.

I can't think of any issues I've had with calls or data other than group texts and MMS not downloading in a timely manner (or sometimes at all) unless I turn off WiFi. Turning off WiFI causes the group text or MMS to download as it normally would.

The other issue is the phone gets hot for no apparent reason. I generally shut it down for a while when that occurs. That, too, started after the latest update.

I've performed a factory data reset, dorked with the settings, etc., but thus far nothing seems to alleviate the issue.

Feel free to use me as a guinea pig here. I'd definitely like to get this sorted out.

I see many posts about the issue and many 'work-arounds' which dont seem to work.

Are we going to see a solution or at least hear about one any time soon? This is becoming a very annoying hindrance to using my phone.

I am up for an upgrade in January and this is seriously making me consider alternatives.

Again, is there a solution coming or not?

I, too, am having the same issues as everyone when it comes to receiving group texts. I noticed this began in mid-September for me.

Same issue here. Using stock messaging app and the issue still occurs in safe mode.

I shouldn't have to turn off Wi-Fi just to download MMS messages. Before this most recent update, they would download normally whether I was connect to Wi-Fi and 4G or 4G only.

I am having very much the same problems that have been mentioned on this board, including the overheating (mine seems to be random), slow text messages, slow downloading of group texts, plus some other issues such as apps randomly deciding to close, my dock not working properly, my phone dying within a few hours (constantly having to charge it), and just generally slow functioning in general.

Today I decided to turn off my wifi for the day and see what happens. So far, I have no problems, no overheating, texting is fast, battery isn't draining at an alarming rate and actually everything is fast. It's like I have my old phone back before the update seemed to disable wifi functionality to be almost negligible. However, the ability to use wifi without having issues seems to be important to many people, including me. The fact that wifi was working and now it is not is a huge problem. I am not eligible for an upgrade until May, so a fix to this problem would help immensely until then.

Today I was finally able to download the new Words with Friends without any problems as I was having when trying to download the new Words with Friends using wifi several times. If this problem stems from the last update, then it seems some kind of fix would be in order (either from Verizon or Motorola). My husband has the Razr model one upgrade from mine and he has no problems with any of these issues.

I am having the same issue. Group text downloading and sending very slow when wifi is turned on. Also phone gets extremely hot at times. Today it got so hot I had to take it out of my pocket it was burning my leg.

Try this shut the phone Down. Remove the Sim Card very carefully leave it out for 10min. then re-install it see if that helps the issue..

I removed the SIM from mine for about 5 minutes, cleaned the contacts on the SIM, but had no change in the problems. I don't see how 10 minutes will make a difference but it would be curious if it did.

The fact of MMS not going over wifi with Verizon is pretty widely accepted and well known. So if group texting was working before while on wifi, all I can think is that either there was a different app in use, such as hangouts or iMessage, which means its more like an IM than a text, or if Verizon previously considered a group text as just multiple texts instead of one MMS, and now have changed that policy. I'm not confident that either of these are correct, I'm just trying to throw possibilities out there.

My wife and I have the same problem with texts. This occurred after the latest update as well. Also notice that some multipart texts do not arrive in sequence. This is a real pain, spent hours with Verizon and they wanted me to reset my phone. Getting sick of Verizon and their inability to do anything about this. Been with them since the inception of cellular service. Maybe time to start seriously looking at another carrier!!

I have spoken with a higher up at Verizon who seemed to place the issue with Motorola and their update. He felt that Motorola was dragging their feet on correcting the update issue which has caused the problem.

It is very aggravating. I really never noticed the overheating issue until just recently. Wow, the phone gets hot.

I have a company account with several lines. I have to look into how to extricate all the lines from Verizon if this isn't cleared up!

I have been having a group text message problem since Memorial Day weekend 2014. I have called sooooo many times and have been traded on and off to so many different techs with no problem solved. This all started after an update to my razr maxx hd. Everyone thinks they have it fixed when I talk to them but guess what same problem. Today my phone showed that I had 25 messages. I could not get to them. I turn my phone off and on guess what they disappear. I was on the phone 2 different times with techs for a couple of hours today. I have lost many messages this way and spent so much time on this issue it is ridiculous. I have a big family and this is how we keep in touch. I AM SO TIRED of Verizon. I am thinking about paying to get out of my contract and I will take my entire family with me. This is ridiculous. If this is how Verizon and Motorola takes care of their customers I don't want any part of it. I should not have to turn wi-fi off or find a work around. This is the 21st century and cell phones have been around for quite awhile! Someone should know something!!!!

I'm having the exact same problem. My phone sends MMS messages with absolutely no problem. However, when someone sends to me in MMS messaging, I just get a message that it is downloading. After reading some other threads from others with the same problem, it has something to do with the wi-fi. When I turn off the wi-fi, the message comes through without issue. Very irritating. I hope this is something that they are working on fixing.

I too have this same issue on an Razr M. My phone started overheating in early May when my wifi is on. I've done a factory reset on it and was told that it was due to an application that I have running. If I turn my wifi off for the day, I don't have any issues with it getting hot and my group texts come through with no issues. My husband has the Razr HD and his only started getting hot and draining the battery after the last update. He actually has to turn his WIFI off for the day or his battery will be dead by 11am. (He charges every night.)

Have you checked on the Motorola's D.R.M. HD Forum to see if there's any solutions for this issue you might check there and you might try clearing the cache's for your text messaging see if that helps to restore it back to downloading again..

To anyone with a brand new Droid Turbo who is having issues "downloading group texts" or if "group texts won't receive correctly on WiFi"... I was getting so mad at the same issue! so I disabled all the default texting apps my Turbo came with (Messaging, Messaging+, Hangouts), then downloaded the "Chomp SMS" texting app...it has TONS of settings you can play around with, SPECIFICALLY one that will auto switch to mobile data if it senses a group text coming in if you're on WiFi...plus if you're worried about someone sending a really large file via group text, you can set a size limit on "Chomp SMS" but I selected no limit...let me know if this works for everyone!!

So was this problem never solved. My Droid Razr Maxx HD is doing the exact same thing. Difficulty receiving group text messages and overheating. I have just been living with it and cursing Motorola and Verizon for the last 3 months. My phone use to work great before all of the updates. I am out of contract and can upgrade my phone, but was hoping to save a little money and keep the phone for more than 2 years.

Is motorola going to have a patch for this? It has been over 3 months since the problem was reported. My next phone for sure will not be a motorola because of all of these problems and lack of response.

We want to make sure we resolve your issues maleko9! Have you downloaded the Verizon Messages application from the play store? Can you test to see if it would work on group messages? Have you tried to put the phone on safe mode http://vz.to/1Dy2o53 to see if an application can be causing the issue? I can understand wanting to save money, but we have great deals http://vz.to/1Dy20DI going on everyday! Please share details.

have same issue with droid maxx. Husband does Not have the issue but has an older droid ultra....

His phone can get the same group message I do on mine and he does not have to down load it... He is almost always on wi fi
