Lost Bluetooth MAP protocol with Jellybean Update - HELP!

So, why is it that everytime an update gets rolled out to the RAZR, we end up LOSING functionality/features? With ICS it was greatly reduced battery life, loss of flash support, loss of some widgets, and now with Jellybean my phone is no longer sending text messages to my GPS (safe texting--where it reads your incoming text messages)?

I deleted the bluetooth profiles in both my Garmin Nuvi 3590 and the RAZR, resynced, and still nothing. This was working fine in ICS, and no it's not a problem with Garmin because a quick search of the net shows users of the Droid RAZR are having this problem with Ford Sync, GPS units, and even the Lexus system. Looks like we have lost a working Bluetooth MAP (Message Access Profile). I drive several thousand miles a month and this is a very important feature for me. Can anyone offer any advice here? Can we get this thing working please!? lol

Have you cleared the system cache of the phone since the update? I would try that first. It will not delete any data, it is not a factory reset.

To do this, it is the following steps. Please note, the 5th step I did not do right the first time, so it did nothing. Press and hold the volume down and wait for a second or 2 and then press and hold the volume up and the volume down buttons for about 5-6 seconds, and then release.

PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU DO THIS, AND YOU CHOOSE THE WRONG OPTION, YOU COULD DO A FACTORY RESET. MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE EACH OPTION CAREFULLY...

- Power the phone down.

- Hold the volume up and down and power key down all at the same time until you see the Boot Mode Selection Menu. This should happen within a couple of seconds.

- Press the volume down key until "Recovery" is highlighted. Press the volume up key to select.

- Wait until you see a triangle with an exclamation point in it.

- Press and hold the volume down key. While doing that, press and hold the volume up key then release them. This should put you into the Android system recovery.

- Press the volume down key until wipe cache partition is highlighted.

- Press the power button to select. You will be brought back to the Android system recovery utility when it is complete.

- Press the power button to select "reboot system now". Wait for the phone to boot.

No dice, but thanks. Yes, I deleted the bluebooth pairing off both devices, cleared the cache. When repairing the devices it says do I want to give permission for the Nuvi to access the phonebook and anther window asking if I want to give Bluetooth MAP access. I say yes to both...unit pairs, phone works, phonebook works, but no message access.

yep i have that problem too. with ford sync. worked like a champ then jelly bean update, phone works but no text message read out. just did the wipe cache and even went and unpaired/deleted phone from sync, (even pulled fuse like another post suggested) and deleted ford sync from phone, and then re paired phone to ford and still doesn't work for texts. i think some tech forgot to write something into the new update. i see hundreds having same problem.

At least you have done what you can, short of doing a factory reset, which may not work either.. Hopefully there will be a quick hotfix for it.

I wonder why some of the people who got the update in December never saw that?

When you're on the road, we want to be there for every mile marker making sure you have access to things like your bluetooth all without these issues. So, let's jump right into the deep end and work on this together.

Of course, I'm terribly sorry to learn about these matters with your bluetooth no longer connecting to your Garmin Nuvi so you can utilize safe texting. May I start by asking if this happened directly after the update to Jellybean or was it just around the same time? Jellybean and every update for that matter should be a sweet treat, not something that makes life more difficult. Now, you've done some great troubleshooting from what I can tell thus far, but does the bluetooth profile even show up any longer either your GPS or the RAZR? And do you receive any kind of error or is there just no connection with safe texting? Let's get to the bottom of things!

Thanks for your email. Yes, the problem occurred directly after the update. As a matter of fact, I was getting ready to walk out the door that day and saw that it was ready for the update to install, so I left it on the charger for a few extra minutes to complete the download before leaving. Once I got in the car, it wasn't working. I spent several days trying to make it work, and have actually spent a few hours talking to Motorola Support. Started with a Level I tech, then escalated to a Level II, and finally, when he couldn't figure anything out after an hour they told me I would be receiving a call from a Level III within 24-48 hours...it's been over a week now, so I guess they gave up.

I really think it is pretty crappy to have a phone, under warranty, that has a feature like that which gets taken away by a software update with no notice, especially considering it is not in the release notes, and not generally well known. This capability was one of the main reasons I purchased this phone. Now it can not perform the function that I need it to and no one seems to be able to do anything about it.

FYI, I have done everything I know how to do, including a full wipe/factory reset...no changes...still does not work.

I have a Verizon Motorola Droid Razr running JellyBean. I just bought a 2013 Nissan Altima with Bluetooth and I have the same problems. When paired with the car, I have no problems with calls or streaming music but I can only read text messages. If I send a message back it can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours to actually send the message. The Razr shows the message sending but it never really goes anywhere. I have done the full reboot from Motorola but as with everyone else, this did not solve the problem.

Just got my brand new Ford F150 with Ford Sync and I have the same problem. Phone, streaming works fine...no text messaging, sending or receiving work.

I'm not sure where the problem lies...with Moto or Ford?

My Razr with JB syncs with my vehicle and laptop via BT no problem. Not sure what problem you're having.

I had the same problem, did a Google search and found out that Ford does not support those functions with the Razr JB update. :smileysad:

I use Robin virtual assistant and with one push on the icon can send/receive text messages and emails via BT. It's a decent workaround. :smileyhappy:

I know how convenient a bluetooth connection can be jim313! What specific difficulties are you having? Will your handset establish a bluetooth connection to any compatible device or are you having difficulties with one specific connection? If bluetooth will work for most connections, our control may be limited.

Hello Verizon!

Posted the text problem on Apr 9, 2013 and it hasn't been addressed. You have a lot of people out here who can't send text messages from their bluetooth car connections since the JellyBean update! Let's go, guys, there has been plenty of time to look into this..... how about some action?

I think it is up to the auto industry to update their app, not Verizon or Motorola.

I disagree. My phone and my carrier are disposable where my vehicle is not. One of the features of my phone was MAP when I purchased it. Would you tolerate it if a software update took away your ability to browse the web on your computer? Jelly Bean took away something that should have remained in place to be backwards compatible. Google, Motorola, Verizon...get your heads together and put MAP functionality back in place or provide an option to roll back to ICS.

I have noticed that jelly been seems to be in the middle of all the problems happening with these droid razors. Go to your apps and disable or uninstall jelly bean then reboot your phone. go back into apps and force stop whatever apps you do not want to use and clear data. this should save your battery by keeping apps that you do not use from updating automatically. Use the apps that came with the phone and resrict background data and all should work fine.

You are aware that JellyBean is the OS and not an app, aren't you? Other than rooting the phone, there is no way to "disable" the OS. Also, you can force stop the Verizon planted apps all you want, they keep starting up on their own. Maybe you should learn what you are talking about before offering advice.

Just so everyone is aware, this is due to the whole Motorola/Google ownership change. In previous versions of Android, Motorola sourced their own protocols for their products, and included MAP in their bluetooth profiles. Since the Jelly Bean update, they've used Google's own Bluetooth protocols, in which MAP was omitted. Since I'm not seeing this feature in any new phones with updated software, I believe it to be a concern for many at Google who may think that they're encouraging communication type behavior while driving, of which many studies are being performed, and some are showing any form of communication while driving is a distraction. Since MAP is pretty much strictly for having texts pushed to cars, they probably believe they are opening themselves up to liability by having this in their phones.

Or they're just lazy and forgot to include it in the most recent versions of Android, and there hasn't been enough people complaining about this missing feature.

I know I'm annoyed with it, as I bought a Razr specifically for this feature, only to have it removed by an update. I wouldn't have updated had I known it was going to do that, and unfortunately, unlike previous versions of Android, going to Jelly Bean is irreversable.

Got an update on my Razr on July 16 to System Version 9.18.79.XT926, Android version 4.1.2 and MAP seems to be working with my Altima now. I had to delete the Razr in the Altima then re-pair it. For 2 days, I am able to receive and send text messages!

I too have been on line and phone with tech support trying to get MAP back on my phone. No success! When I check for updates it tells me my phone is up to date. Still no connections with my Garmin Nuvi GPS. The gps keeps asking on my phone for Permission to connect to MAP. I hit OK, but no MAP for it to connect to. It all worked before the updates from Verizon. Now its time for Google/Verizon to step up to the plate and correct this problem. I want MAP back on my phone.

Thank you for the details rskater! We want to get your bluetooth to work as it should. Have you tried to connect to other compatible Bluetooths after the update? Did you try to remove the Bluetooth connection and establish a new one? Please provide the details needed so that I can better assist.

I hope that you all have realized that it is an Jelly Bean/Ice Cream Sandwich issue, it's just more pronounced with Motorola because prior to Ice Cream Sandwich, Motorola developed their own Bluetooth protocol handling, but now it is sourced by Google, who either intentionally or unintentionally didn't include it in Jelly Bean/Ice Cream Sandwich. 'tis a crying shame, IMHO. The scary thing is, I just qualified for an upgrade, and I see that the new Droid Razr Ultra Maxx has MAP listed in the specs sheet, but I'm very very leery that it actually contains it. Any chance anyone in support can do their due diligence and maybe ask some higher ups if Google fixed/included the MAP profile in Android v4.2 or higher?

It isn't a phone pairing issue, as we are all (for the most part) able to connect our phones to the bluetooth in our car, and use the phone calling features and music features, but the safe texting option doesn't work because the phones don't have the correct programming language to send to the cars anymore, when they used to have them in prior versions of Android.

This feature is being advertised in many different places, whether it is the auto manufacturer or phone companies, but the feature no longer works, and is deceptive and misleading to advertise as such. Please escalate this so that the basic coding of including that bluetooth profile is included into the phones that we were told would include the feature when we purchased them.

So no update on this still I am guessing? I have the exact same issues with my Bionic. JB took away a feature that was part of the phone when I bought it!!! No one is doing a single thing to fix this, not VZW, not Moto, not Google. I am so fed up with all 3 of them and the lack of any responsibility for essentially downgrading the phone I bought with my hard earned money. WHERE IS THE SOLUTION ALREADY!!! Someone needs to get their head out of you know where and do something already! I have tried every support possible, yet I still sit with this phone now. And yes I have tried everything, pairing, deleting, factory reset, nada on all account.

Check my link above, that the moderator linked for us(this thread). You have to call Motorola and get to Level 3 support. They will REPLACE your phone. This is a hardware issue to which they can not, or are not, going to fix. Motorola is replacing my phone, but, not until after I emailed them a letter via their contact us link. This is NOT a Verizon issue, it is a hardware issue and is a direct result of the Google/Motorola merger. In JellyBean, they pushed a Bluetooth stack to some Motorola devices in which does NOT support MAP on those particular pieces of hardware.

Well, tried that, getting nothing but run around and everyone passing me on to someone else. I will say this, never will buy a Mototola product again, that is 100% certain. Overall, I am rather annoyed at all 3 parties, Moto, Google, and Verizon. No one is even making the slightest attempt to make this right, and it disgusts me. All the years I have been a VZW customer, all the Droids I have had, and they all could care less.
