Quick Office on the XOOM

Earlier today I opened an excel spreadsheet from an email. When I clicked on the file it asked which app I wanted to use, documents-to-go or quick office. I choose quick office and was able to read the excel spreadsheet with no problem. However I do have a problem. No where is there an icon for quick office in my list of available applications. Without an icon I can't open the application. Quck office is not listed in my list of installed applications but it does show up in my manage applications list.

How do I execute open office on my xoom if it does not show up as an installed application?

Hello,

When you first logged in to your Gmail account on your

tablet, you were automatically given access to the

same personal information (emails, events, and

contacts) that you have on a computer using Gmail,

Google Calendar™, and Contacts.

If you use Microsoft Office Outlook on your work

computer, your tablet can synchronize emails, events,

and contacts with your Microsoft Exchange server.

To automatically sync your applications data, touch

> Settings > Accounts & sync > Add

account > Auto-sync.

To select which apps to synchronize:

1 Touch > Settings > Accounts & sync

> Add account.

2 If necessary, touch Auto-sync to turn it off.

3 Touch an account under Manage accounts to see its

list of apps.

4 Touch the apps you don’t want to synchronize, like

Calendar, Contacts, or Email.

I have the same question as the above person and I can't see how your response answered it and all! Still a blank slate looking for the app to open Quickoffice. I can't open it either and I want to download docs from my desktop to my xoom.

Have you tried just opening another office document, which should launch quickoffice again?

It appears that the full version isn't quite ready for the xoom yet (according to http://www.quickoffice.com/quickoffice_connect_suite_android/ anyway).

If you use a typical file explorer to browse to the file what happens?

One other note... I've heard good things about documents to go, which is available on the market, but I haven't tried it personally.

Quickoffice is preloaded on the Xoom, apps/all apps, it is there but a read only version for now. The full app will be available later to create docs. For now you can open documents sent to you.

Lewwill is right. If I look under "Settings" | "Applications" | "Manage applications" | "All" and scroll down, I see "Quickoffice version 1.0.38 - Tablet" is taking 5.77MB of storage space, 12K of which is data.

This is interesting. So apparently there are some applications that are installed kind of as services that you can see only through the settings app, but otherwise have no user interface. The only thing I can do directly with this Quickoffice is to "clear data". From the settings app there are things that can be done, "Force stop", "Cancel", "Clear Cache", etc. but they are all grayed out for this app.

Under "Permissions" it says:

"This application can access the following on your tablet:

Network communication

full Internet access

System tools

make application always run, prevent tablet from sleeping"

Well, this is somewhat distrubing news for me. There is an app installed by default (Quickoffice) that is using Xoom resources that I have no control over. And even if I want to stop or uninstall it, apparently I cannot. I just tried to see if I could kill it with the ES Task Manager app I downloaded, but when I selected "services' I got a crash:

"Sorry!

The application ES Task Manager (process com.estrongs.android.taskmanager) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."

I suppose that 5.77 MB wasted out of 32 GB is not something to worry about, and after all, this is a 1.0 product so some rough spots are to be expected. There are still plenty resources available and the apps perform sufficiently fast.

Because these are user to user support forums. If you need a define answer dial 611. Many of the techs are nice enough to scan the forums and help out, but there isn't meant to be an expectation that things here get an answer from verizon.

As far as an answer, you launch quick office by opening an office document.
