I have a brand new phone. It constantly drops the location services entirely. The location services will work for a few miles in navigator, then stop. Same with google maps, and every other GPS enabled app. I either have to toggle location services on/off in the settings, or do a soft reset, to get the GPS working again. I downloaded the "GPS test" App to check the function, and ran all available updates. I have google location services unchecked. Sometimes the location works for a while, and then a few hours later it no longer works. One of the reasons I got a droid in the first place is because I liked google maps.
Separately my phone just started doing the purple screen on calls. I made the jump from iphone and am starting to question my decision. Apps that work flawlessly on iphones are buggy on my new droid.

thanks, I will consider a reset. However the phone is so new and I had these problems on day one of the new phone, before installing any map/location apps.
I installed the GPS doctor app ($1.99). It told me to turn on "google location services". You should not have to tell Google your whereabouts for GPS features to work, period. The phone can use the verizon towers and it can use the satellites. That being said, I turned google location services on, and maps seem to work. However, the satellite GPS is still working intermittently and requires toggling. Frustrating but at least it works.
Anyone know if it is required to turn on google location services in order for maps to work correctly?

Hey matt give this a try) try doing a soft reset power & lower volume button push them in at the same time hold em in for 20 sec. then release the button's you might need to do also a clearing of system cache. so give each one those suggestions a try and hopefully it fixes the issue.. b33

Matt_PSU - Thank you for taking the time to post. Google Maps is a very sweet app, and you ask a terrific question. The answer is that you do not need to have Google Location Services on in order for the GPS to work. It is supposed to help gain a more accurate reading of your location, and also show you local restaurants and stores, but it is not needed for direct navigation purposes. Standalone GPS Services is the main check box needed for the App.
