Razr Maxx gets very warm (hot) in weak signal areas

I weak signal areas, like at work, 0 to 2 bars and 3g sometimes the phone gets very hot and battery discharges very quickly, plugging in charger just maintains current level it increase percent charged, worse since ice cream, reboot helps sometimes, putting into airplane mode allows cool down right away, but heats back up when airplane mode disabled, tried clearing cache partition, HELP

I have the samsung galaxy s3 and mine does the same at work. I can literally feel it get hot in my pocket against my leg. but the reason that I have come up with is that its constantly loosing signal,searching for signal, and switching back and forth from 1x/3g/4g. with it doing this it will make the phone constantly work and use power which is why you see your battery drain allong with the low signal area. hope that answered your question and I hope that was your question in the first place.

As unclejames1 stated, weak/no signal causes the phone to work harder to find/maintain connection to the network and is the reason for the increased battery drain and heating up of the phone. Nothing you can do to stop this except to move the phone into a better signal area and/or switching the phone into airplane mode while in the weak/no signal area.

This is NOT solely a characteristic of the Razr Maxx, but of ANY phone be it smartphone or basic phone.

I agree with the idea that you both put forward, what I am having trouble understanding is why the Razr Maxx is so much worse than the Droid X that it replaced, my droid never used 80 to 90 percent of the battery during the work day the way the razr does

It may be how your Receiving the Signal if its not a Strong Signal and your Maxx has to Pull a little Harder it will tend to Get a little Warmer and the Battery will Drain a little Quicker as Well) Since you have i'm assuming you have I.C.S. you can Hold your Home Button and when you see a Vertical List Take your Finger and Either Swipe Left or Right an Move the Apps off the Screen that will help some as Well i do this on my Maxx) and Give a app Called System Panel a Try it's $ 2.99 or Free i like the $2.99 Version and Since Verizon was Added to the Carrier Billing Program you can Charge it That Way) You can also use Credit cards or Googles new Redeem Card.. But app is Really Reliable.. b33 :smileyhappy:

maybe if your phone is trying to use 4g and can't get a good signal so it switches back and forth from 4g to 3g, you can try one of those apps that allows you to turn off the 4g and then you might get good 3g signal. just an idea

I used to have this problem. Maxx ran hot for months--maybe since day one--but a factory default reset did the trick. Plug in phone and sync, then to reset: (System Settings > Privacy > Factory Default Reset). Thanks to Google, the rebuilding after resetting process is quick and fairly painless--WAY better than it was with my iPhone. Maxx was done in 15 minutes; iPhone took four hours.

It still gets warm but not burn-the-leg-in-pants-pocket-hot.

On wifi and very light use, I'll now use about 1% of the battery per hour (in an area with poor cell coverage) and never get hot. With heavy use off of wifi, it might get to 100 degrees.

Some suggestions:

**Turn off 'Standalone GPS' unless you need it. Google and VZW location services are enough in many cases

**Get GSam Battery Monitor (used to be Bad Ass Battery) from the Play Store. Does a great job showing power use.

**If you spend a lot of time in a non- or poor-4G area, switch phone from 4G to GSM (System Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Network Mode > GSM/UMTS).
