Text still being sent to old phone!

We just switched to a Moto G Power, from an old Moto-Z. The new MotoG receives phone calls as expected but the Text messages still go to the old Moto-Z. How can I fix this? I was going to give the old phone to kids for use at home on Wi-Fi only. Any thoughts?

Thank you for the details. We want to make sure these messages stop for you. Can you tell me what message app you were using on the old phone? It is possible you are still signed in to your Google account and any message apps that are synching these messages. Did you reset the old phone?
