Update issues

It seems that every time there is an update, my phone has problems. Last time it took a factory reset to fix the issues. I am hoping that isn't the case this time around.
Currently the only two issues I am noticing are: battery life sucks and my screen is black whenever I make phone calls. I used to be able to go pretty much all day without needing to charge my phone, even with high volume of texting and using the internet. Now I have to charge the phone pretty much every three or four hours. Also, I noticed that no matter how long I leave it on the charger, even overnight, it never gets to a full charge. This is really hard as I rely on my phone a lot during the day when I am working and I can't always charge it. With regard to making phone calls, the screen never lights up when making a call. When I try to check my voicemail, I cannot enter my password as the screen is black. Touching the power button, which used to light up the screen when on a call, does nothing.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to possibly fix these issues, I would apppreciate some help. If my only option is a factory reset, so be it. Just hoping there may be some other options before I have to do that again. I would love for one of these updates to actually NOT cause any issues!
Thank you

You could try clearing cache, but a factory reset fixes a plethora of issues, especially after an OTA update.
EDIT: download only the apps you want from the Google Play. There are many functions in JB that may replace some of your apps. Some do not work with JB. My recommendation is to go to My Apps in Google Play and manually install after the OTA update factory reset. Good Luck!
