Why don't I hear the notification sounds for text messages?

I have just got the new s6 and I'm using the default messaging app but recently changed to the Verizon messaging app since then it seems like when I get texts when they come through I do not hear them or the notification sound so has this been a problem or is it maybe the Verizon messaging app a problem

Open the customization part of the Verizon messaging app to make sure it is on the same or a notification that has a good sound that will get your attention. As Verizon messaging app can also have a different sound which could be causing your problem.
