I have the same problem. My "Unfortunately, Messaging has stopped" notifications are driving me crazy. I have gotten 3 in the past couple minutes. I have texts that I am not receiving. I have text that are not being delivered. I am using the stock Messenger, the one with the green icon. I have also tried the Verizon Messenger and hello SMS apps with no change. I have read through the instructions that have been given to others and cleared the cache and performed factory resets with no results. It seems to me that there is a definite software issue since a lot of people with Droid Ultra and Maxx devices are having the same issues. Currently my device is completely undependable since I know for a fact I have missed texts and had many undelivered. What is Verizon doing to correct this issue?
Have you tried using Hangouts? It is supposed to be the replacement for the stock messaging application. I would take it for a spin and see if you can send and receive again. If so, you can always disable the stock messaging as I have. I've had no messaging crash notifications and no SMS/MMS problems either.
Yes, I gave Hangouts a whirl and it was very disappointing. It is one of those messenger apps that requires all the users that you are texting to be using the app. I am not into that. I am currently using one that is more like the original app called "8sms (Stock Messaging,KitKat)" by THINKLEFT. I also disabled the original Messenger and unchecked the notification box. So, I havent heard a peep from it since I installed this most recent one. I think there is just a bug in the 19.6.3 update that jacks up the original messenger. I think if we disable and uncheck notifications we can use most any we want without issues.
I'm having the same problem, I want to use the messaging app that comes with the phone but it has been terrible for the last month. No one seems to be able to figure this out?
I want to help keep those messages flowing elund34! Is this happening with every received message? How about with sent messages? When did these difficulties start? Have you tried power cycling the device for a soft reset?JonathanK_VZWVZWSupportFollow Us on Twitter@VZWSupport
My girlfriend and i have the exact same phone with the same version of Android installed, build and everythieng. she started getting this same message wheneve she receives an MMS, gorup or pic. She uses the stock messing app, the green icon. i have never had thsi happen and i use the Message+ app. She hs don all the things that have been suggested and it still shuts down. I'm going to talk with her about 'safe mode' tonight. that's the only thig we've haven't tried. I'm thinkinh that it might be some app that one of her friends had her d/l that is the real culprit.
I honestly couldn't tell you when this started happening, as I dont know when I stopped missing texts from people, but am guessing at around June 11th or 12th. Maybe they figured I just wasn't answering or whatever. If I send a text to a person I typically receive a reply from them, but if they intiate the text messages I wont get them. I have tried turning the phone off multiple times on multiple days and as soon as everything loads back up that error message pops up before I can even do anything. I have tried using 'Safe Mode' and still get the popup error message.
I want you to be able to enjoy your messaging MtnMan5150! Sorry to hear of your difficulties. Is this happening with every message? Any changes since you cleared the app cache? Did you do it on each message app? Did you retain your existing apps during the update?JonathanK_VZWVZWSupportFollow Us on Twitter@VZWSupport
MtnMan5150 It was formerly the case that Hangouts only handled chatting but has been changed for quite a while. Google has rolled SMS and the chatting into the same application now. I would take it for another run to see if if works for you now.
elund34 Check whether your default messaging application has changed. It may just be that you are trying to use an app that is not set to be handling it completely.. Settings > Wireless & Networks - More... > Default SMS app
The only SMS app I have on my phone is the standard green icon and that is the only app under the default messaging tab in which to choose. So there must be something else that has either highjacked my messaging or there is a bug in the programming.
jboca148, Thank you so much for reaching out to us. I want to make sure that we get all of your text messages up and running without any kind of issues. Let's try, Settings, Apps, All, then scroll to Text, and try to Force Stop, Clear Data, and Clear Cache. Are you able ot receive text messages without any kind of issues? Please keep us posted. I tried everything myself and at the Verizon store. I have been sent 2 replacement phones and had to send them both back with the same problem. I had to switch back to my old droid that I had before my upgrade just to be able to communicate properly. To say I'm not happy would be an understatement.
Thanks for trying that mgr29063. Safe mode will enable the the device to run without third party apps. Please allow a full day to test the device in safe mode and let us know how the device responds. JonathanK_VZWVZWSupportFollow Us on Twitter@VZWSupport
Is there any other great ideas from the Verizon team as to what we are supposed to do with this crappy expensive service and product we have?
i also have done everything that has been listed by verizon. safe mode, clear cache, clear data, tried 3rd party apps, all of it! and still nothing... at this point something needs to be done by verizon or motorola, clearly this is not a small issue with one or two phones, or an app that someone used to mess up something. This is an issue with verizon or motorola software that needs to be fixed. my contract says i can text.. which i cannot do, so you are not upholding your end of the contract i'm paying for!
I have droid mini with same prompt of unfortunately.... Started a week ago. Just cleared cache and data. Hope it works!
I just replaced my phone for a few reasons including this and my new one just started having this issue again today. I've tried everything except the master reset, hopefully they will fix this ASAP. Dropping texts is not something I can tolerate.
There is a workaround for this problem. The fact is, the default messaging app (little green face) is no longer usable because it crashes and you will not reliably receive text messages. Here is the workaround.
1) Download and install the "Verizon Messages" app from the Play Store.
2) Go to settings/apps/all and scroll to Messaging (little green face). Uncheck "Show Notifications" and click on "Disable".
3) Launch the Verizon Messages app and set it as your default for messaging.
It's unfortunate that Motorola/Verizon have not provided a fix for the default messaging app. Since disabling it, and installing the Verizon Messages app, I am now once again able to receive txt messages reliably.
This seemed to fix my issue with my droid....question...this Verizon Messenger will not let me delete a thread. Is there something I am missing?
Just press and hold the thread and select "Delete Conversation"
Mine just started today. I've cleared cache, forced stopped, reset phone, no fix. I have also cleared more than half of my messages including locked messages that I've wanted to save, no fix. I have removed any app that I've downloaded within the last month, no fix. Verizon, this phone is a replacement phone, my last phone was a replacement phone, the phones before that were also replacement phones. I'm sick of all these products failing on me. I can buy a car for what I'm paying you guys for unreliable phones and service. Get your act together. I waited on hold for over a half an hour today trying to get ahold of costumer service or tech. This was after other dropped calls or accidental disconnects navigating through your automated service. This is completely unacceptable. Do better! Why are we paying for more for Verizon than others and getting less than other? YOU ARE NOT MAINTAINING AN ACCEPTABLE STANDARD! DO BETTER! Happy 4th everybody!! I would send you guys some fireworks pictures from New Orleans but my new phone is (removed)!

To Drosefw & others... I spoke to Verizon today, no projected fix to standard Android messaging app. I downloaded Verizon Messages (I think it's called messages + in the Play Store), and it seems to be working fine. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS FROM drosefw & you will be fine. All of my conversations loaded and I didn't lose a thing in translation--even the emogis all stayed put... they look a bit different, but are fine.
I have downloaded it and it seems to work fine. Please notify me when there
is a fix for the stock messaging app.
Thanks, Garrett
