Does anyone know what the square Icon with a check mark in it next to the time means?

Do you have an alarm set? Or it might be that you have downloaded apps. Try pulling down the notification bar and see if that's it.

	Market App download complete			Voicemail Message
	Chat Notification			Connected /Disconnected from VPN
	New Pop/IMAP Email Message			Synchronizing data / New Corp Email Message
	Problem with message delivery			Problem with account sign-in (password) or sync; Data connectivity issue (temporary and permanent)
