Being asked to return my own router

I have had Verizon Fios for several years now.  When Fios was setup many years back, I preferred to use my own Tplink router instead of buying or renting Verizon router. Now I am moving out of my residence and I need to disconnect the service, as Verizon is unavailable at my new residence.  As I am going through the online process to disconnect the service, I am being asked to return "Customer Provided Router" with Model# as NONVZ. It seems that Verizon knows this is a customer own router and not a Verizon brand. So why I am being asked to return it?
