As someone who frequently travels through rural and urban areas, I rely heavily on mobile communication for business. I’d like to suggest a feature enhancement that could greatly improve user control and security when using Wi-Fi Calling:

Please consider adding a setting that allows users to enable a prompt such as:

> **“Ask before connecting to unsecured Wi-Fi networks (except for emergency calls)”**

This would prevent automatic connection to open networks, which can pose privacy and performance risks—especially when Wi-Fi Calling is enabled. It would also give users confidence that their phone won’t prioritize unreliable or unsafe networks unless absolutely necessary (e.g., during a 911 call).

This feature would strike an ideal balance between safety, autonomy, and emergency readiness, particularly for those of us who depend on clear and secure call quality in varied environments.

Wouldn't using a VPN on public WiFi get around the security risk concerns?

I was thinking about how the phone service can be automated so that calling 911 doesn’t require anything except a good signal, even for people without a VPN.

Someone please correct me if I don't have this correct, but all US-version cell phones are required to be able to call 911 so long as the phone can be powered on. You don't need a service plan, or even a SIM/eSIM on the phone. The phone will just find whatever signal it can pick up to make the call. On my phone, it's not even necessary to get past the screen lock because there's an "emergency call" button to press on my lock screen. Thought that was the rationale behind all carriers charging a 911 use fee in the fees section of the bill. Obviously, if a phone is very outdated and cannot run on 4G at least, then it might be an issue.
