SOS

My phone keeps going into SOS mode. I have called Verizon twice over the issue.  What is going on? I have been with Verizon over 15 years, I am about to switch carriers if this persists.

Hello, WMD80. Help is here as you definitely deserve some answers. Your 15 years of business mean the world to us, and we would never want to see you leave us. I see it has been two days since you posted this. Are you still experiencing the SOS status on the phone? What is your zip code?

There are several different factors which could be causing this.

-Network outages can be checked at either Downdetector.com or on the Check Network Status page.

-If you just moved to a new area, Verizon may just not be any good there.  Dead zones can occur anywhere, unfortunately.

-If your signal strength is usually only average and not great, the towers in your area may be really congested for some reason.  Those who have middling reception at best are in danger of losing service when the towers are running at capacity, because then the towers cannot broadcast as much signal to all the devices connected.

-Customers who are not on either Unlimited Ultimate or Unlimited Plus are subject to some level of deprioritization on the towers.  If the network is busy, your phone gets routed to towers farther away than the one(s) closest to you.  For example, OpenSignal has told me my phone sometimes gets bounced around between 3-4 towers during congested periods, and some of the towers are 10 or so miles away.  The closest tower is just a block away, but I'm not paying enough to be connected to it constantly LOL.

-An unusual cause of this problem I've read about in these forums is having a 3rd party Wi-Fi source in your home interfering with Verizon reception on your phone.  Other possible sources of interference can come from living near an airport due to the air traffic controller tower using radio waves, or possibly some other strong EMF source blocking out reception.
