Upgrading swapped phones

I had upgraded my phone on my line to the iphone14 plus last year. Well my daughter had wanted the latest and greatest, so I took one for the team and gave her the iPhone 14 and I’m using her old phone the iPhone 12. I would love to upgrade the iPhone 12 now. How can I do this? I keep getting the run around when I chat and call and I’m not getting the answer I’m looking for. I owe $33 for the iPhone 12 and I want to pay that off. They keep saying I owe $599 when I have had the 12 for over 2 years now. Makes no sense. I just want a new phone and a straight up answer. Thank you
