We will be traveling to an area in our home state that Verizon does not offer service. AT&T offers GSM in that area. Is it possible to set something on the phone (i.e. roaming) or on the network via the account to allow an iPhone 12 or higher to have service through the GSM towers?

Great question and thank you for reaching out to us here. While there is a way to change some network settings within the settings of an iPhone, there is not a way to have your device prefer the GSM towers of another provider. You device will connect to the service available in that area. If possible, we do recommend connecting to Wi-Fi when it is available cand enabling Wi-Fi calling on your device.

I don't understand why my phone cannot use the GSM network to roam or use the extended network. I only get SOS capability on occasion but that is not useful. There is no wifi available in this area. I usually have to spend money on other temporary solutions. Very inconvenient and I don't understand why VZW won't allow roaming.
