3G keeps going down

Where I live, my phone keeps going from 1G to 3G, and at same time bars on the phone go anywhere form 3 bars to 1 bar or no bars all within minutes, even if i don't move phone. I think it is killing my battery because it keeps looking for signal. It seems I can make phone calls no problem and can get sms. Browsing the web though or market is very spotty and many times get network error. Is there a problem in my area? when i first got the phone it did not do this.

If you haven't already done this, dial *228, option 2 and update your towers and roaming list.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

I have this problem too, and I've done the #228 thing a few times to deal with other issues (while on the phone with Verizon support).

Can someone please tell me the implications of 1G vs 3G? I know it has to do with speed but what else does this affect and what are the advantages of 3G? I'm not a 'techie' so that is why I'm asking.

Thanks

I have done the *228 did nothing.

I ended up exchanging the phone after verizon support recommended I do that.

Well it did not fix the issue, still having same problem but only where I live.  My area is suppose to have 3G so not sure what going on.

What I don't get is other phones we have in my house not smartphones seem to be getting plenty of bars.  So not sure the fascinate just stinks at reception in general especailly if signal not so great.

Try powering the device off, removing the battery about 1 minute then putting the battery back in,  and then powering the device back on and dialing *228 send and option 1on the phone.

4G

The next generation of wireless technology that goes beyond what is currently available. The various industry groups driving development expect 4G technology to offer increased voice, video and multimedia capabilities; a higher network capacity; improved spectral efficiency; and high-speed data rates over current 3G benchmarks.

3G

An industry standard term for Third Generation, the third generation of technology of the mobile wireless industry. 3G systems use wideband digital radio technology as compared to 2nd generation narrowband digital radio. Refers to higher data speeds in wireless technologies including voice data and multimedia content at rates as high as 2 MBps.

1G

An industry standard for First Generation. It describes the first technology used in a new application. In cellular telecommunications, the first generation used analog (usually FM) radio technology. For first generation cordless telephones, the first generation of products used single channel (using AM) radios.

The 3G network offers more options for data services and higher speeds than the 1G network.
