4G and Wifi Icons on at the same time - Samsung Galaxy S6

I just recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and I have noticed that even on Wifi, the 4G icon is still it up. I have disabled the Caller Name ID app. I am using Visual Voice Mail. Could that be what is causing both to be lit up? I need help, because my data usage has gone way up since I got this phone.

gem0183,

You have brought up some great questions. Let’s roll up our sleeves to get this fixed. You mentioned that this is a new phone. How long have you had this phone? A few weeks? A few months? What plan are you currently on? You will be able to check if apps are updating over mobile data by opening up the Play Store. You will click on upper left hand corner with 3 horizontal lines & then choose “my apps”. You can click on each one to see if it requires the updates to run on mobile data. For Apps to update & use a lot of data on the 4G network, they would have to be very large apps & it’s not likely that is the cause of your spike in data usage. The same goes for visual voicemail. As you need to have your mobile data turned on to operate the visual voicemail, the amount of data is so minuscule that it hardly calculates to anything. I also have to mention that often times when your wifi signal is not as strong as the 4G signal, the wifi signal will drop & use the 4G data network. To really make sure that this isn’t happening, you can turn off the mobile data when not using it. This will guarantee that you are only using the wifi connection.

Have you made sure that smart switch is turned off? When it's turned on it will switch between the two.

Other than turning that off, making sure your apps are set to update only on Wi-Fi and turning off mobile data completely while on Wi-Fi I can't think of much else to do.

Under settings>data usage you should be able to monitor which apps are you using the most data. You should also be able to change your quick buttons in the drop down menu so one of them is mobile data which makes it quick to turn it off and on.

I have had this issue ever since I got the phone. How would I be able to

check to see if any of my apps are using mobile data to run or to update?

Could it be something with the visual voice mail? If so, how can I fix it?

Settings>Data Usage will show you what's using all the data.

Opening the Google Play store and going into settings and marking them to only update on Wi-Fi would make it so they do just that.
