After Lollipop Update S4 Loses Network

After performing the lollipop update on my wife's S4 each night she loses Network Cell Service. We live in a poor service area so it seems that at night when there is a period of poor or no Network Service the phone loses cellular connection. This does not affect wifi, bluetooth, etc. Only Cellular. I cannot put it in/out of airplane mode to reset. I can only turn it off and back on. I have the same S4 and do not experience the issue. Any suggestions?

You can power the device off, remove the sim card for a minute, and reinstall. That will do the same thing as airplane mode.

Did you do a factory reset after the lollipop update?

I am having the exact same problem, each morning I have to do a reboot to regain service. Also the first time I connect my car radio to my S4 via bluetooth to listen to Spotify I can not get full volume without having to activate the sound volume warning and overiding it by giving it permission to go to full volume. This becomes a painful game at times.

Have you tried a factory reset? Though I know that won't help with the volume issue; it does that same thing when you use headphones.

I am having the same issue. Why does Verizon feel that rolling out a bad update is acceptable? Not a happy customer, and with my contract coming up, tell me why I should stay.

Because the are the largest network provider and if you like to travel then you'll almost always sure to have service.

You can also attempt a factory reset if you haven't.

Ok, after much effort I did a factory reset. Took half the day to get things back to normal. Woke up this morning and no server is found. Traveled to a couple of different areas to see if that would help. Had to do another reboot to regain connectivity..Next suggestion please.

You're not gonna like it, but there is a second way to attempt a factory reset, however seeing as it took you half a day to get your settings back how you like them you may not want to try it. In which case I suggest going to get a new SIM card as well - that is how you connect to the network.

Ok, I just pulled the sim card and firmly reseated it. Will keep an eye on things today. The acid test will come tonight when it lies dormant on charge. While I don't want to incorrectly blame the update, I never had this problem before.

It is most likely the update, you're not the only one experiencing issues. However yours is unique in that it seems only at night you experience issues.

I went to a campground this last week that was in a low signal area. I had to reboot my phone 4 times over the course of the week in order to get signal back, just as described elsewhere in this thread. I've been in this same campground with this same phone the last two years, and didn't have this problem the previous two years. In my case, it did not seem to have anything to do with whether the phone was charging or not. It did seem to have to do with being in a part of the campground where there was almost no cell signal. Most of the time in camp I had 1X data, sometimes it would go to 3G. This was right on the northern edge of the 49457 zip code. The coverage map shows this area has LTE... which it does, if you climb about 60 feet up a tree. (I can routinely get LTE there in the winter - as soon as the leaves come in on the trees it's toast though).

Someone proposed a theory earlier in this thread that it was trying to save battery by shutting down the cell radio if it went a certain period of time without a signal. This makes really good sense, except that it's not turning it back on to test every so often, and toggling airplane mode doesn't reset it (which it should).

I came to dread the times on 3G.. it apparently picks a really poor threshold on determining when to drop to 1X, because the 3G signal is garbage (too much packet loss to do anything useful) on less than 3 bars, where the 1X will be nice and reliable (although really slow) once it switches to it. In that situation I'd rather have 1X because at least I can actually get online with it.

I m a skeptic when it comes to some of these responses. I found on a thread elsewhere that on LTE/CDMA should be used for Verizon. I swithed to it and my phone looks for signal when I get back to a place that has signal. Please give LTE /CDMA a try and see if 6ouncan go without the reboots.

On a side note.. for further testing I put the phone back in global mode and within a half hour I lost signal and couldn't get it back until a restart was performed.

Just Dave. It's funny you say what you say about the campground. We went to a campground where we couldn't get signal until we put our phones in the "magic spot". Which happened to be in the cupholder of a specific camp chair in the middle of our cabin. (I was also using KitKat at the time) Lol. Radio waves are funny like that!

Another side note.. Moving your wifi router a foot in any direction can dramatically change your signal in your house as well.

I am having this same issue since updating to Lollipop. I work in a manufacturing plant and there are areas where I will lose service in the building. It has happened since I got the phone two years ago. But it would always come back on its own before the update. Same with an area of dead zone along my commute. It would always come back before the update.

Since Lollipop, If I lose network connection/signal (showing grayed out bars), I have to restart.

Yes, I factory reset after the update.

Yes, I've tried toggling airplane mode.

Yes, I've tried changing the network type from Global to LTE/CDMA and back.

Verizon, please help. My phone isn't even two years old. This update broke it. Please fix it.

Don't go 'back' and swapping without service won't give you service.

Try this. Restart your phone in a know place to have service and switch to LTE/CDMA and leave it there. I changed to it 3 days ago and have not permanently lost signal and have not had to restart my phone. If prompted to switch back to Global check the 'don't ask again' box and click OK. Make sure after the question you are still on LTE/CDMA. It worked for me! Let us know the result!

This is a great thread! I have been having the EXACT same issues ever since Lollipoop was installed on my S4. I keep losing the network because I both live and work in locations with poor cell service. The only fix is to restart the phone and toggling Airplane mode does not fix the problem.

Verizon sent me a new SIM card which did not resolve the issue (they also suggested I get a new phone as mine is "outdated" - it is less than two years old). I will do the suggested switch to LTE/CDMA and keep it there (like another user, I had made the switch but went back to Global when prompted by the phone).

After the switch to LTE / CDMA and forcing it to stay I'm currently sitting at 242 hours without a restart. That's 10 days and the only reason I restarted was because my daughter played a game that crashed and forced a restart. Let us know the result after the switch.
