Badge notifications missing

All of a sudden all of my badge notifications have stopped working. I am no longer seeing message counts on any icons, including FB/Email/Outlook/BlueMail/Messenger.

I've gone into the settings and made sure App Icon Badge - Show With Number is on, also made sure the apps were enabled for notification. I am getting notifications in the drop down, but that's not the most convenient. I've tried switching launchers and that's not changing anything either.

Any ideas on what is going on?

Oreo eliminated the notification options you say have stopped.  There are many, many posts here with the same issue.

Just arbitrarily, out of nowhere? I haven't done any updates to the phone since I got it.

ninny1176,

I personally would not be able to function if my notifications didn't work properly. Let's look into this. What is your Android and Build number (Settings > About Phone > Software Information)? Have you already tried to clear out the application cache (http://spr.ly/6587DdGo9)?

Hi, Ryan.

Yes, I've cleaned out the app cache, but no badge notifications. General notifications are working, but no more message counts, etc. on the icons. This isn't only on my phone, but has also started on my wife's S9, so there must have been an update that killed it.

I have a SG9 build v.R16NW.G960USQU1ARBG

I am truly sorry to hear that your notifications are not working as you have grown accustomed to. As jrh4054 mentioned, with the recent software update, this has changed. The number on the app badge is no longer the norm. When an app has something new, it will be signified with a little dot on the app, typically on the upper right side. In regards to you not doing any updates, the phone will update itself if there is an update available and you have yet to install it. You can confirm this by going back to where Ryan instructed to go in settings. Once there check for updates, if you are told no update is available, you are on the most current version available for your device. Do you not see the little dots on your apps when you have something new? When you put your finger at the top of the phone and drag down to get to the notifications, are they not listed there?

"When an app has something new, it will be signified with a little dot on the app,..."

This isn't the case with mine, or my wife's phone. She uses the default Samsung launcher and I use MS Arrow, both no longer show any badge notifications. Both devices are completely up to date.

Yes, we do still get notifications on top, but not on the icons themselves which is ridiculous since the notification settings on the phone has a setting if I want badge numbers or not (attached)SmartSelect_20180508-094436_Settings.jpg

ninny1176,

We appreciate the visual. We want to ensure we've left no stone unturned to have a full understanding. Options available with the badges may vary. Here's a link with the details we do have for the current available settings: http://spr.ly/6580DerFs

I've gone thru the settings and confirmed that the badge notifications are on, as well as, making sure they are enabled on each app. Still nothing.

If this was a feature change by Oreo, then why leave the settings to turn it on or off? My guess is VZW sent out an update that hosed this feature as it's not just my phone, but also my wife's that isn't working properly anymore.

This is very frustrating as I now have a bunch of email that I've missed due to this issue.

I absolutely know how important it is to have proper notifications, and I want to see this resolved as effectively as possible. I want to try to place the device into Safe Mode, and see if this helps. To do this, follow the steps in this link: http://spr.ly/6586D5Ofo Once it's in Safe Mode, test out the notification function to see if there is any improvement.

Thank you for your reply. However, when in safe mode, the phone tells me that "Downloaded apps disabled while safe mode turned on". So, basically, I'm not getting anything while in safe mode.

Thank you for reviewing this step, ninny1176. We have noted reporting of users encountering this change with the badge notifications after the latest update by Samsung. The setting remains even after the update, so it is possible this is something that Samsung incorporates into a future update, especially with increased consumer feedback. The last troubleshooting step noted by the manufacturer is to factory reset the phone and review the abdge notifications. This will erase all content on the phone so would recommend completing a backup first. To confirm, have you completed a backup and if so what did you use? Verizon cloud, Google, etc.?

ninny1176, you are correct. Oreo fried the badge notification.  Many, many S8 and S9 users have complained here about this.  The VZW CS rep who told you to start your phone is safe mode obviously hasn't read all the community posts making the same complaint.

I'm missing badge notifications too.   Driving me crazy.

To update, I get badges (little red numbers in circle) on email, message +, and Facebook messenger.  However they disappear if I open the app, but still haven't read them.  I do not get the number badges on Facebook and Words with Friends.  It is really frustrating.  I had a Galaxy S7 and everything worked great.  The sales rep at the Verizon store convinced me to upgrade to the s9, but it has a lot of issues with notifications.  Also other apps I set to receive notifications don't work at all.  I have all the settings turned on.  I would actually return this phone and go back to the s7, but they convinced me to sell my phone back to them.  Wish I hadn't.  Hope they do an update.

The problem you and many, many other S8 and S9 users are having is because Oreo changed how notifications work and eliminated the ability to customize them.
