I originally posted this in response to someone else's post, but customer service doesn't seem to be visiting that one anymore, so I thought I'd start a new one. A lot of people are having this problem since the latest upgrade. It's quite obviously a KitKat issue and less to do withVerizon, as this is happening to users with different carriers, as well. (I know it's tempting to jump down Verizon's throat, but I think they're aware of the issue. We'll see what they say in this particular discussion thread.)
There was absolutely nothing wrong with my phone before the update. I'm not one of those who has to have the Latest and Greatest, but the phone said it was going to push through the newest update. Okay; whatever...go ahead.
UGH.
First, I always figured the red X was the new way of showing that it's charging. It doesn't make sense, but that seems to be the case. (I've seen people complaining about that red X and thinking it means it's not charging or something. I believe it IS charging, though I also occasionally get the lightning bolt, depending on which charger I use. I get the red X with the charger that originally came with the phone. I've red that the red X might mean the voltage isn't high enough, so the charging isn't very fast...or something like that. *shrugs* )
Second, it only charges about half the time on the charger that came with the phone. I have an old USB charger at work that I use on the PC there that seems to work every time I charge it. The car charger also seems to work okay; I don't use it as often, so I'm not positive on that. And I have another old charger that I use at my boyfriend's place, and that also works. It's the one that came with the phone that seems to give me the most problems.
When I charge it at home at night, I have to cross my fingers that it'll work. I don't know why it's so finicky. I haven't figured out a pattern yet, why it works sometimes and why it doesn't others. I've restarted the phone sometimes and that seems to work okay.
I haven't installed any new apps since the update, by the way, though a lot of apps seem to be updating more now. It seems everyday something's updating...that didn't happen before.
I charged it this past Thursday night, then unplugged it about 6.30am. (Today is Monday, by the way.) I sat down to make some important phone calls an hour and a half later, and the battery was completely drained, about 5% remaining. I plugged it into my laptop (using the original charger that came with the phone), so I can make the calls...but it wasn't charging. I had to plug it into the wall, and it finally decided to work, but it's took a while. (I turned it off to charge, hoping that might speed thing up.)
Something similar happened again last night. I use a white noise app on my phone every night, and also have my alarm clock on the phone, so I keep it plugged in almost all night. It was charging last night just fine, but when I finally crawled out of bed, the battery was completely drained and telling me I needed to plug it in to charge SOON. It was just about to die on me. Mind you, the bloody thing WAS charged in. So it doesn't always recognize the charger...it decides to charge sometimes and work fine...or not charge at all...or charge and then give up.
This is a major problem, and I'm not a happy camper about this.
I have to start my day with a full charge, otherwise I'm just screwed. As I'm sure most of us are. Right now, I've got a 26% charge on my phone and I'm leaving for work. I'll plug it into the car charger, and I'll plug it in to the PC. Those worked fine last Friday when I had the same issue.
This is incredibly frustrating. I can upgrade my phone in August, so I suppose I can deal with this for another month...but I'd actually hoped to wait another month or so after that, even. Guess I won't be able to.
***For the record, I will not spend any extra money for this phone--no different chargers or batteries or anything. Not when I'm so close to an upgrade. So if there are other ways I can fix this without a factory reset or anything like that, please let me know!***
P.S. Anybody know if the Galaxy S5 is having any problems?
