Can I switch devices by swapping SIM cards?

My wife bought a Note 3 and doesn't like the size of it. She wants to switch with me, i have the S4. Can I simply remove the SD and Sim cards to do the swap or should I do it through my Verizon?

Yes.  You can simply switch the cards.
