Can no longer access emoticons in the message compose bar.  Have to use the microphone button to select emoji.  Is there a way to change it back?

Have you tried going into settings>application>application manager>all (scroll left to get to all)>message+ and then deleted the cache, restarted the device and tried again?

Is the icon just gone? Or it doesn't work when you select it?

Did you recently upgrade the software on your phone or installed anything new when they disappeared? Are you using the stock messaging app or a third party messaging app?

I am having the same problem on my iPad. I do not have the ability to select an emoji.  There is no icon to do so.  There used to be. This is so frustrating.  Would like to know how to get it working again.
