Download Friendcaster from the Android Market (the free version works fine). Go to the menu and select "Preferences" then scroll to Contact Sync Settings, select "Sync Contacts" and then "Sync Now!"
Your FB contacts and their pictures should appear. Worked for me. By the way, although many like Friendcaster as a FB app replacement, I am fine with the stock FB app, so I disabled all notifications through Friendcaster so it's almost like it's not on my phone (only used as a contact sync tool). Good luck!

With all the rumors flying around about this and that...
It is NOT implemented with ICS. There is no API's that allow Facebook and such to sync the photos. Google left it out for now as they are trying to make it more efficient, and have it work better within the framework on Android. Which people believe Google has figured it out with the 4.0.3 update there released new API's and people assume these will work with Facebook and the like to allow syncing with contacts. It is believe sometime within the next two weeks we'll get that update as the SDK is already updated for it.

^ did the same exact thing, works like a charm!
only problem with Friendcaster is not all my friends (about 6 or 7) show for some reason...for example I have a friend named Sandi who is on my friends list, I can see her and interact with her on the regular FB app, but on friendcaster. She post on my wall but can only see it on the other FB app...thinking it was a filter issue but cannot figure out where the filters are.
