Couple of questions

This is my first smart phone on Verizon, had basic phones on Verizon for years. Just came from another carrier where I had an LG L90 so trying to get used to where everything is on the Samsung.

I have the email app all set up but how do I make it so it doesn't download my emails unless I sync it manually. That's how it was on my other phone and I preferred it that way or is that possible at all? I know I can uncheck sync but it's a pain to go into the account settings every time to turn the sync on and off especially when I run 2 email servers. With my other phone the built in email app had a setting to only sync manually or some such so all I had to do was open the app and hit sync so during the day if I was on the computer email would not be coming into the phone but on my computer instead and if I wanted to get email on my phone I would just open the app and hit sync to download it if this makes sense.

Also how do I back up my phone? I know about gmail for contacts and calendar but on my LG phone there was a backup icon. I would hit it and select it to back everything up and it would make a file on my memory card then if I had to wipe my phone I could just reload that file and all my settings, contacts, calendar and background screen would be restored to how I had everything set but I am not seeing any icon like that on this phone.

Also my LG phone had quick memo so I could just draw around a part of a webpage I wanted to send or write on the phone, does this phone have anything like that? I had considered the LG G3 but thought I would try something different this time. Mary

So the cloud will back up all my settings and reload my phone just the way I have everything set up with my background picture, ringtone set to what I had and everything? I guess what my LG phone did was make a mirror image like you do on a computer and was used to having a file I could save on my computer besides on the memory card to reload everything the way I set it up including contacts and calendar. Mary

Great question! The cloud will back up everything you select. You can restore everything back to the phone but you will need to customize it again. It will not set up your background pictures.

i have 2 pop3 accounts, gmail & yahoo app.

in accounts or within the app, i have all accounts sync email but have selected "no notification".

within the gmail settings you can select what you want synced, i choose only contacts & email in gmail but anything in gmail account is saved if you have to wipe the device.

one thing i don't like on the s5 is a selection to delete from phone & leave on server.

i learned the hardway & lost some important emails that would've still been available on my pc.

Ok on the hunt to try and find something that will back up the whole phone settings and all like my LG did. I read about kleis on some forum and someone said it would do that so downloaded it to the computer but only saw photos, contacts and just the basic things and I don't want to have to use the computer to do the kind of back up I want so if anyone knows of anything.

I use AOL and roadrunner email and when I set both accounts up in the app I was given the option to either save to server or delete from server when I delete the mail on my phone so guess that is a provider specific thing that yaoo or gmail don't have but maybe if you use their app for each one it will do that. I want my email on but just want to sync it manually as I don't want it downloading 50 emails when I have to turn on 4g so will have to play with the settings some more and see if this is possible. Was so much easier on my LG phone as it would do that.

Also my calendar icon always displays 31 on the home screen but when I click to open it the right date is highlighted. Is there something wrong with the calendar or what? I have to open the app to see the correct date every time and it's getting annoying. Mary

The 31 on the Calendar widget is a built in feature. You may locate the date by pulling the down the notification screen or heading into the calendar app as you mentioned.

I finally got the email set up to where it does not sync when connected online unless I go in and sync it manually, just had to play around with the settings. I solved the calendar problem by installing smooth calendar widget from the google store. It shows the calendar icon on the top of my screen with the correct date on the outside of the icon plus it shows my next 3 appointments and what day they are. Love it, just what I needed and it's so customizable and everything synced with my original calendar so I didn't have to re-enter appointments. Here is a screen shot.

Someone recommended pro back up to me and I think the paid version will back up my settings and all so going to test that out. Mary
