Custom contact notification sounds gone

KATWAL47, having customized ringtones for contacts saved on your phone is definitely a great feature to have. I want to make sure that you are on the right path to setting these ringtones just like how they were before the software update. Were these pre-installed ringtones that came with your Samsung Galaxy S8 or were these customized ringtones that you purchased and downloaded? Can you please describe how you set up these ringtones to your contacts prior to the software update?

The pre-installed message tones are gone now and not available to reset either!

The customized ringtone option is still there, but the customized messaging tones for contacts is gone. I use this a lot to separate texts from my work contacts vs. texts from my friends/family. I never get phone calls, I don't care about being able to have different ringtones for anyone. But I need to be able to have a different text tone for people, even if it's the pre-installed stuff. Any chance of that coming back vzw_customer_support?

I have a S8 and am using the messges app, the yellow envelope. To further clarify, this is NOT about ringtones. This is about txt message notification sounds. In the individual contact EDIT there is no longer a drop down to set a custom sound

Custom text tones are still working using Verizon Messages. Maybe switch to using that app?

I think it's the best messaging app .Very easy to use .

I will not be forced to switch to a different messenger app just so I can use different tones for different contacts, but I may be forced to switch carriers.

I updated last night and my custom ringtones and custom notifications are gone. This is very frustrating

Ringtones are not the issue. I receive very few phone calls. THIS IS ABOUT MESSAGE TONES THAT YOU CAN ASSIGN TO YOUR DIFFERENT CONTACTS AS PEOPLE HAVE EXPLAINED MULTIPLE TIMES.

VZW, are you looking into this issue! It is ABSOLUTELY unacceptable to remove a filed that many ppl use and then expect your customers to switch to your messaging app in order to maybe "fix": the issue. My contract is due for renewal and I might just switch to another carrier.

I just spent an hr chatting with an unhelpful Verizon tech who says its Samsungs issue but when you talk to Samsung they said Verizon didn't authorize the custom text notifications. They said Verizon wanted only a custom vibrate option. I use the custom text notifications to distinguish between work texts and personal texts. I need this capability restored

Samsung removed the custom contact notification feature from their messaging app with the recent software update. Switching carriers won’t help, but switching messaging apps will as there are several others available that still offer this functionality.

Many Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and foreign carrier users reported the issue to Samsung and requested that they restore the functionality as it’s affecting those using the updated Samsung Messages app regardless of carrier.

I spoke with Samsung and they did not remove functionality from their own app. That would make no sense for them to do that anyway.

That’s interesting since only the developers of each application has the ability to alter its code and functions, and the Samsung Messaging App is developed by Samsung. Did they have any ideas who might have removed that feature from their app on all their Verizon/AT&T/T-Mobile Oreo devices?

I honestly do not foresee this issue being fixed by Samsung and therefore people will be forced to move to an iPhone or use yet another third party messaging app in order to the get the text messaging tone feature back.

I'm very sorry to read that a software update has removed the ability to set custom notification sounds. The software updates are done by the manufacturer & Verizon Wireless does extensive testing with the manufacturer to make sure all enhancements work correctly before we release them to our customers. Regrettably, there is not a way to go back to an older software version. I can understand not wanting to move to another text app that may have this ability, but it is always an option. I do want to look into this further for you & I want to do all that I can to change this experience around so that we can keep you as our valued customer. I've been told by the Samsung reps that Verizon is the only company that

has disabled the individual text message sounds and is forcing its

customers to use its inferior text app. This is unacceptable customer

service and so is Verizon's continued denial of causing customer service

dissatisfaction. Please forward my complaint to the appropriate team.

Samsung is not taking responsibility for Verizon's poor choices of

unsatisfactory customer service. I'll not be buying an inferior piece of

technology, as you ridiculously recommend, to remedy this issue, but I'll

certainly look into less inferior cell service.

Wow that’s terrible that Samsung would lie to you like that! Check out the Android/Samsung forum websites, or an internet search on the subject and you’ll find numerous complaints on the issue from Samsung users on Verizon, T-Mobile, At&t and also foreign providers.

Samsung removed the feature from their apps with the Oreo software version. No carrier (Verizon or otherwise) had anything to do with the change.

There’s no need to use any inferior app, nor any required cost to use a different texting app. There are several free options to choose from in the Play Store that many users prefer over the stock app. You could keep using the Samsung Messaging App if you prefer, or try a third party app that offers more functionality and customization like the feature that Samsung removed from all of their devices with their new software version

Yes, my husband and I both have Samsung Galaxy 8 plus phones and we are very upset that these custom sounds are gone! Those custom sounds allowed us to know who was trying to contact us. We hate this and want them to put this feature back on our phones ASAP!

Sherwooddoggie, I know how important it is to make sure that you able to distinguish the text tones from one another. I want to make sure that we get everything addressed for you. You have to go tap the contact that you would like to edit. There's a "View More" at the bottom. Tap on that and there will be a section for contact ringtone and SMS tone. There you will be able to customize the sound that you would like to hear for your text messages that will be coming in.

I'm trying to figure out why everyone is so in love with the Samsung stock messaging app . What's so special about it, that any other messaging app can't do?

I have the same problem. In my contacts a message ringtone is not available. Now it makes a small sound when I get a text.

Being able to tell who's messaging you is very important, KATWAL47. While a software update is meant to enhance the performance of a device, some features can also be taken away. We can lift up your feedback. LenniePaz had a great suggestion to try the Messages Plus application, as it still allows you to customize the notification sounds for your messages.

Lynn, my only issue with Messages Plus, is that the green LED notification doesn't work now. Only the blue LED works with texts now .I liked having green, because my Emails are blue .Any chance this will be fixed?

There are A LOT of us upset by this. I have had Verizon for years. I have always used Samsung or other android phones and have ALWAYS had this text feature!!! Please just make a bug fix and reinstate the feature. I have used and dislike message plus!!

Does this help include fixing the issue?? No matter if Verizon or Samsung someone [removed] up. Perhaps you could work together to fix the issue. I love my phone and I am constantly bragging about my Verizon services but this stinks and needs to be fixed ASAP

I've had the S4, S5, S6, and now S8. The custom alert tones have always been there. Someone explain WHY they're gone now? Really. I WANT AN EXPLANATION WHY SOMETHING THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE IS SUDDENLY GONE.

Tap on the conversation of the contact you want to add custom tone . In the top right of the conversation, tap on the 3 dots, then customize . You can add a custom tone from there .

We understand that this is an important feature for all of our customers, KATM0055. I use the same feature on my phone to know who's calling me as well. With regard to the update you will no longer have the option to set customer notification sounds in contacts. If you are using our Verizon Message+ or the Samsung Messages application there is an option to set notification sounds by contact. I just tried this, there is no where to change SMS tone. It only allows to change the ringtone.

PLEASE GET THIS FIXED. I AGREE WITH THE OTHERS, I DON'T USE CALLING MUCH AND CUSTOMIZED TEST ALERTS ALLOW ME TO KNOW WHO IS TRYING TO REACH ME. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT AND WILL CAUSE ME TO GO TO A DIFFERENT CARRIER!

We would be sad if you left us over this. We verified that this is working as designed with the current software update. Users can no longer set custom notification sounds in Contacts. If you are using the Verizon Message+ or the Samsung Messages application as an option to set notification, the sounds by contact is available within the application. Certain other 3rd party messaging applications may also have this functionality.

Updates are always meant to improve your phone experience. I also want you to use whichever texting app you are comfortable with. At this time, only Samsung has the ability to make changes to software. I can see that it is not just you, but many users who are not happy with this feature change with the recent update. I can certainly understand the confusion with the recent changes within the app, Vsgirl8600. We have verified that this feature has been removed in the latest release. Other third party applications may have this functionality however, and so you may want to test out other apps to regain this function. Additionally, we have lifted up the concern and it is possible the feature may return in a future update, so I would recommend ensuring all future updates are downloaded and applied as soon as they are released. Being able to distinguish between your incoming alerts is a useful feature to have. Software updates can change the availability of features that we all get used to having. The most recent update for the S8/S8+ did just that as the option for custom text alerts has been removed. If you're using the Message+ app, you still have the option to customize your tones via these steps Message+ > Message thread for the contact > Menu (three dots in upper right corner) > Customize > Tones and select the tone you'd like to set for that contact.
