Emails will not update and can not send emails

The last update on my email account was October 16 at 5:35 pm.  I cannot access new emails and I cannot send any emails with a failed message.  How do I fix?

Try clearing cache on the email app, then reboot the phone.  If that doesn't get the emails back, then delete the email account and then re-add it and see if that works.
