Galaxy Nexus 4.3 OTA Upgrade?

It's Tuesday, 11 June 2013, and rumors continue about the much anticipated release of Google Jelly Bean 4.3 (or some variant of it). Though it didn't happen yesterday the 10th as some had expected--others now say July, an article by Robert Triggs just a few hours ago on Android Authority begs the question "Galaxy Nexus passes through Bluetooth SIG, is Android 4.3 incoming?" Apparently, a GT-I9250 (aka "Maguro": GSM/HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus variant on AT&T/T-Mobile networks) was spied being tested against Bluetooth standards, a requirement for new update releases. That, my friends, is a major step toward our beloved GNexes getting another transfusion that's slated to resolve the over-discussed problems of overheating and rapidly draining batteries. Plus, gaining a couple of new features: a new camera UI and a power-saving Bluetooth upgrade to v4.0 that most higher end devices have. To read Robert Triggs' complete article, go to " http://m.androidauthority.com/galaxy-nexus-passes-bluetooth-android-4-3-224336/ " . I'm so (steam)punked, I check my phone's System Updates in Settings every hour or so.

Thank you Customer Support for the links that are no longer valid.

So, I have a Galaxy Nexus phone that is less than one month old and now I see that I was wrong in believing that I would get timely updates to the OS.  I have a new 2 yr contract of course. Tell me Customer Support, what phone should I have selected instead? Or do you have any USEFUL information relating to the GNex next OS upgrade? I would be happy even to hear that testing of 4.3 or 4.4 is planned at least.

How on earth did you get a galaxy nexus on contract less than a month ago when they haven't sold the phone (even refurb) for months?  It got the kiss of EOL back in January.

jtown,

I got the G-Nex at best buy as part of their promo in which I guess they were cleaning out the old to make way for the new Samsung devices about to debut.

Oh, look at that. The Galaxy S4 is getting its 4.3 update today.  Still nothing for the Galaxy Nexus Verizon?????

The S4 is a fully "skinned" Samsung device, which means that Samsung took stock 4.3 Android, added all their customizations and apps, fully tested it, sent it to Verizon, who undoubtedly did their own testing.....and now its approved and out.

But the bone stock Galaxy Nexus with no customizations and no custom apps still sits on 4.2.....

Don't worry, TimTheK, I'm sure a friendly Verizon rep will be in touch to let you know that they are sorry that you are unhappy with your phone, and they certainly wouldn't want you to be stuck with something you don't like. I bet they'll even be happy to do everything they can for you if you call them to learn about all of the great phones they have to which you can upgrade!

Is there a constructive way of resolving this? I'm not convinced Verizon is finished updating the phone, but who knows what's really happening. Did they forgo 4.3 to save money on 'testing'? It seems like verizon is insinuating the other carriers are careless and barely test their phones before OTAs. Let me remind you of all the signal issues the Verizon version had early on while AT&T's was just fine. Seems their stringent testing was top notch.

If you're an iPhone user I suppose Verizon is the place to be. On the other hand Android users should beware. I like many others will be leaving for a better experience. I hope the (removed) cease with their prewritten responses, it is degrading. Nexus owners probably aren't interested in your sales pitch to buy a new phone with a great heavily skinned ROM 🙂

For those trying out AIO Wireless, be careful. Looks like AT&T may be wrapping AIO into their new merger of Cricket. Please do report back though how their service is though. I bet there are plenty of people here ready to upgrade to a new Nexus handset

Thanks, so here is my revised strategy:

1. Suspend Verizon service

2. Purchase sim card (done)

3. Purchase Nexus 5

4. Test Tmobile pre-paid plan

5. Test AT&T pre-paid (I hear AiO throttle badly)

6. Decide Nexus 5 & Pre-paid or

7. Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Developers Edition

It would be nice if this "Developer Edition" thing catches on...and Verizon doesn't ruin it.

Hey there shirke,

We truly would be saddened to see you leave. I understand that software updates keep our devices up to date and running smoothly.  Once the software is released from the manufacture we test it thoroughly to ensure that it improves your device rather then hinder it. I do not have any updates regarding software releases, but you can visit http://bit.ly/n5snpq for updates.

We still offer the nations most reliable service and fastest 4G LTE speeds and I want you to continue to experience that. I absolutely want to make sure that you have a fully functional device. Are you currently experiencing any issues with the device? Do you have the Galaxy Nexus? Anything else that has you looking to switch?

Please provide additional details. I want to see what I can do to continue our relationship for years to come.

Good God Nicholas, knock it off. No one is buying it. The problem is you

aren't thoroughly testing it. We know, because a compiled 4.3 has been

running for months now.

Your other carriers are running the same version on the same phone. Drop

the CSR and insulting copy paste dialog and actually care about your

customers.

I would stop responding to the CSR responses, honestly.  You know where Verizon stands now; wait out your contract and then search around for a new provider.  I'd rather discuss those other options than continuing to blast the CSR's who are doing their job and use scripted responses for complaints like this.  We have 3 devices on contract and the last end date is Nov 2014.  I'm just going to be patient until it makes sense to pay the pro rated term fee on that last device then go off contract from that point forward, so I don't have to post angry messages in forums Smiley Happy

btw, I am seeing my full name show up when I respond; how do you create a handle on this forum to avoid displaying your full name?

Your name is displayed to yourself and not the others. I see "mbe3204m" for your username.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Yes - I AM having an issue with my phone - my Bluetooth reception drops out and my software needs to be updated to have TRIM implemented. I heard the new Nexus update fixes those bugs and performance issues. My phone has slowed to a crawl.

Are these automated replies? By not providing the Nexus 5, you are not striving to provide the best experience.

I guess Verizon is becoming a self service company. "Root your phone and update on your own!" What do you lose? Customer Service with no answers and vague statements.

So I've been a Verizon customer a while now (I got the original droid when it came out.  Good phone in my opinion.)  And to be clear I love the service.  Good coverage, relatively fast data rates, very few dead spots.  If you want an iphone, I think this is one of your better options.  A little highly priced, but you get good service.  I am disappointed when Verizon cancelled my unlimited data when I upgraded to the galaxy nexus, and I'm constantly coming close to my data limit.  I would upgrade it, but it costs money.

Now the complaints begin.  My last phone was the HTC Thunderbolt which I got right when it came out.  I saved an upgrade for it and bought into the LTE hype.  LTE on it was great, when it worked.  I went through a number of LTE outages back in the day which was a bit inconvenient.  Then, the phone's software had a really hard time holding onto a signal.  I'd be dumped down to 3G or 2G all the time, even when not moving.  Plus updates were pretty much unheard of.  And the battery life was just awful.  I heard a rumor saying that HTC abandoned the Thunderbolt when it started having problems, and I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.  That was certainly the buggiest phone I've ever had.  Automatic restarts were a nearly daily experience.  Every update took a long time to be released, and I found myself hoping each update would solve problems.  Usually it just swapped the problems for other problems.

So, learning from my mistake with the Thunderbolt, I decided to get a nexus device, expecting fast updates.  I also dumped HTC since the sense UI crashed on me pretty frequently, causing me not to trust proprietary software on phones.  I passed on the Galaxy S IV in order to get a vanilla android experience and fast updates.  I am somewhat regretting that decision, because it seems that the S IV is a higher priority as it has already received android 4.3, while we're still waiting for it.  Don't get me wrong, I like the galaxy nexus, I'm just disappointed that the updates aren't coming, and have been soured from slow updates since the time of the thunderbolt.  In the long run maybe it doesn't matter too much since 4.4 is never coming to the gnex anyway.

So, since I've been continuously disappointed in Verizon's phone support, I have begun investigating other services.  I picked up a cheap unlocked 3G GSM phone, and a T-mobile sim card to test it out.  With potentially the chance to get a nexus 5, which looks awesome.

So, in a nutshell my concerns in a phone are:

1.  Find a phone that I want (upper end) that will be supported in the future

2.  Get more data for a reasonable price (I really want at least 4GB)

3.  Maintain a reliable LTE connection when in a good coverage area

I've found T-mobile will lower my overall price and give me unlimited data back, and I can bring an unlocked phone.  I'm worried about the coverage, so I may try out AT&T since I'm expecting theirs to be a little better.  At this point, I see very few reasons to stick with Verizon minus the $250 early termination charge left on my account.  So, I'd really like to be convinced otherwise.
