Galaxy Nexus Periodic Restart / Reboot

I have had my galaxy nexus since it came out 12.15. Since then it has been rebooting itself for no apparent reason. It is occurring something like 7-10 times a day. It has happened while tethered, while the alarm was going off, while on a call, while playing music, and also while on standby.

It is not a continuous restart problem like some are having with wi-fi. Wi-Fi doesn't appear to have anything to do with my particular problem. But it is incredibly annoying.

Version 4.0.2 is installed.

I got my on the 15th also, and I got a random reboot for the first time just now. I wasn't even using it.

EVery 'smartphone' I have had has done that at one point or another... but not several times a day. I would go to a VZW store and get it replaced, as well as your SIM card....

Most phones get to the point where too many bad processes require a reboot. It could also be an overheating issue...

I've had mine reboot a few times that I can tell. Both times it was plugged in. Once it occured while I wasn't even using it. The boot animation just caught my attention. The other time it occured while in navigation mode. Not sure if I should bring it back or not.

I have had 4 reboots total since I got my Nexus on 12.16. 3 reboots happened when I was playing Angry Birds, and 1 reboot happened when I accidently initiated a phone call and ended the call as quick as I could.

If you are getting that many reboots, I would do a factory reset and do not install any apps for a couple of days. If there are no reboots, then install the apps you want a few at a time, giving time to see if there are reboots, then one of the apps is causing the reboots.

if after the reset is still is rebooting, then getting another device will be in order.

Tried turning off USB debugging since it was only rebooted while plugged in. (to my knowledge) Unfortnately just had a reboot while using Google+. If you aren't sure if your phone has rebooted, get a terminal emulator app and type "uptime". It will show you how long you phone has been on.

Also received the galaxy nexus 12.15. My phone rebooted while i was sleeping and again while i was checking an event in the facebook app the same day. I wonder if it is because i am using encryption so i did a factory reset and hope leaving it unencrypted prevents future issues. If i could use face unlock with encryption i wouldn't let it go so quickly. version 4.0.2

After rethinking what condition was consistent during all of my restarts, all (at least the ones that I noticed) occurred while the device was plugged in. In addition the majority of the restarts occurred while I was moving the phone while plugged in. (picking it up to shut off alarm, picking up while tethering to check signal, placing a call, skipping a song on Gmusic)

My device has only rebooted once in 7 days after installing the extended 2100Ma battery from Samsung. I believe this stopped the rebooting because I am not plugging in my device all of the time to charge it. Not because of the EXT battery itself.

After I got the EXT battery I ended up exchanging my GNEX for a new one at verizon. I did this because I had a 3G and 4G data blackout for several days.

Since I exchanged my GNEX for a new one on Monday 12-26, the 1 restart I had happened while my phone was plugged in using Google Nav.

This leads me to believe that the connection is shorting out and the device losses power for a split second. I have a bunch of USB cords I use, all from different eras and devices. I am going to try only using the Samsung device that came with the Gnex and see if the problem persists.

Anyone else noticing restarts while plugged in?

I am plugged in quite a bit, use my Galaxy Nexus with it plugged in a lot, and I have had very few restarts. The biggest problem I have is Angry Birds quits sometimes, no force close, just closes gracefully. It has happened plugged in and not plugged in.

Just had my nexus start rebooting today. Has done it 3 times in 9 hrs. Just speculating, but I just installed a Google Maps update and Google Video update right before I fell asleep last night. I dont think they were new updates, so it's not to say that it couldnt be the same problem for those of you a couple weeks ago. Gonna uninstall them and see what happens. Something to check if you recently did the same.

Mine is also rebooting. It mostly restarts when recharging, from what I've noticed.

You can easily see on the battery usage graph when a reboot occurs. I attached an image, notice the break in the graph where my phone rebooted.

Recently I've noticed that the reboots correlate to the last time my phone checked for system updates. You can check this yourself by going to Settings->About Phone->System Updates. The last time the phone checked for updates automatically is visible there.

I've noticed that exact same jump in battery life; mine is strictly related to the navigation app and it's done it while plugged in and on battery. When it's on battery the battery life falls when it's plugged in the battery life jumps.

Got my GNexus yesterday and it rebooted 3 times today while I was setting up apps. Also, my old phone was the original Droid. I consistently got 3+ signal strength on it at this location, and 3G. My signal strength on the GN hasn't gotten above 3, and it frequently drops all connection. Also, sound is 1/4 to 1/3 of what I had on the Droid.

Sure hope someone will comment to me before I return the phone.

I'm doing an experiment with a friend of mine. He has an iPhone 4S and I have a Galaxy Nexus and we're trading for a week. I'm not sold on iOS, but the G-Nexus hardware has been a massive fail train for me.

Google updated three core apps yesterday Maps, Music and Earth. I know Navigation which is part of Maps and Music were causing a lot of the reboots so I installed it; this morning on my hour commute it didn't reboot. I'm not trying to convince you to stay with android but just remember we early adopters always pay a price for having the latest and greatest. Apple has had similar problems when it introduces a new phone. I'm still willing to give google some time to fix bugs.

I got my first VZ GNex on 12/16. It worked fine for about 7 - 10 days until the screen would turn of by itself sometimes while I was was using it and other times while it was laying on my desk (not timeout). Sometimes it wouldn't come out of sleep mode, or at least the screen would not illuminate when the power button was pressed. Sometimes when trying to get it out of sleep mode by pressing the power button, I could see the screen come on very dimly for about 1/4 second then go out again. When it did this, I could see the lock screen. But I was never able to get back to the home screen (or any other screen for that matter) without pulling the battery. This problem became more frequent with time. Initially, pulling the battery for 30 seconds did the trick. As time went on, I had to keep the battery out for about 10 minutes or so in order for the device to reboot!

So two days ago, I had enough of this and went down to the VZW store and they agreed to give me a new phone. So far, that problem has not recurred. However, today I was listening to Pandora and the phone rebooted itself. To my knowledge, my first GNex never rebooted itself.

I did install LightFlow today (which some have said may cause this), but have no idea if that may have anything to do with the reboot. If this continues, I will uninstall LightFlow and see what happens. At this point, I doubt it has anything to do with LightFlow, based on all of the other reports on this and other forums. By the way, I was unplugged at the time.

I am having similar issues. I went into the store yesterday and all they could suggest was closing apps that I was not using, but i'm not satisfied with that response.

I had two reboots within a two hour drive on January 2nd, I had been listening to music, and then made a few phone calls, and each time it was during a call that my phone decided to reboot.

Yesterday (January 8), it rebooted three times, once while on a call, one while just sitting in a restaurant and once while it was sitting on my nightstand.

Hoping this can be resolved soon, the window to return the phone is getting close, or I am going to just demand a new GN, but figure it it useless considering the number of people having the same problem. I'm assuming this might have to do with a needed system update?

In each case the phone got very warm, and I wonder if it just does the shut down to prevent it from overheating?

I had the same problem but it stopped after I signed the Nexus into my wifi at home. Have no idea why. My connection bars jumped to 4 from two.

Also, I'm disabled and at home most of the time so this works for me. Haven't had chance to test phone out outside yet.

I believe mine has rebooted 2 or 3 times since getting it on the 15th as well. Usually seems to happen when I'm impatient and trying to hit a setting and back out and do something else before it has time to think.

I had an incredible two years ago and experienced the same thing as the first post in this thread. Constant reboots. A dozen plus times a day.

Verizon determined it to be my tower I was using as it only happened while at home. My wife had an incredible as well and nothing happened with hers.

I ended up going with an X as a replacement and never had the problem again. Verizon was supposed to look into it regarding the tower but I never heard back on the issue.

I purchased my GN on December 18th. I experienced a couple random reboots between December 18th and January 4th, but didn't use the major functions as I was learning the phone, ICS, and it was the holidays. After returning to work, I started using navigation quite frequently and found my GN reboots at least 1-3 times each day while using navigation and I'm on a phone call using bluetooth. Verizon sent me a second phone and it does the same thing. I uninstalled all downloaded apps and it still reboots. The only time it doesn't reboot is when I operate the phone in safe mode. I've called Verizon multiiple times and gotten different technicians with different ideas every time. When you pay as much as we pay for these phones you would expect them to operate properly. GN is not meeting my expectations and I want to change devices. Verizon talks a lot, but I'm impatient and want my phone to work.

Got my phone last week, it has restarted 5 times. 3 of them were this morning each time while typing in a custom URL in the Dolphin HD address bar while in landscape mode. I have since uninstalled Dolphin and will see what happens. The other 2 restarts were while I was doing nothing on the phone. I really hope Google or Verizon figures something out I want to love this phone. Everything is stock for me.

I've has my Nexus a week and this has happened twice now. But I have also had several instances where my 4G signal grayed out and I could not retrieve email, but if I reboot the phone, the network comes back

Ok on the next reboot if you have one go to settings and then battery and see if there is a empty gap in the chart.

No gap is a soft reset which could be caused from your radio crashing and certain software type bugs.

A gap is a hard reset it is easier software causing the OS to crash.

What software do you have installed. Some software is not compatible with ICS even if you can install it from the market.

Thanks for the reply. I have done two hard resets, removed all downloaded apps, and my phone still reboots. I will surely check the battery next time, and I won't have to wait long. I had two reboots this past Sunday while doing nothing, and this is my second GN. The only time my phone has not rebooted is when I operate in "safe mode." Even during the time I had no apps installed my phone rebooted. Very frustrating. I appreciate your reply.

It doesn't reboot in safe mode? I have a feeling its bad cache. When you do a factory reset do you have restore google backup off before logging into Google?

Just a follow up-

I uninstalled the updates for Google Video and Google Maps and stopped having the problem. I waited about a week to verify the problem was solved and havent had any problem since. I recently manually updated both programs just to see if the problem was corrected and I'm still reboot free. Hope this helped someone else!

Over the past week it's randomly rebooted 4 times. So that's an issue.

When you turn the phone sideways for the keyboard it start's to lag horribly.

I had my first dropped call last night, except it wasn't "dropped" the phone just went silent and I had no signal.

Sometimes the GPS is pretty good, other times it show's me a couple miles away from my current location.

The native mail client sucks. I miss the gingerbread Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket one called Social hub.

Battery life blows. I'm lucky if I can get 4 hours out of this thing. Even when I have it on the charger at 50% and say I play netflix, the battery actually goes DOWN. So. wtf.

It's actually kinda laggy, not as smooth as the Skyrocket.

You can't change the soft buttons, what the F**** I MISS THE SEARCH (MAGNIFYING GLASS) BUTTON. This probably pisses me off the most.

When I send MMS messages to people it just sit's at "SENDING" and never sends, then when I send them another picture say the next day, they get bombed with the picture or pictures I sent them the previous day.

I also get failed SMS messages, I have to try and re-send a couple times.

Also, apparently there's no way to get rid of the default google search bar. That's bogus I want another 4x1 or 5x1 space free on my home screen.

So there's no way to actually close apps? The soft key for recent applications used is kinda retarded. I think I've used it maybe once in the month I've had it. Needs to be a search bar instead.

And I think my last complaint about this phone, is that the speaker/volume on the phone sucks. it's gotta be perfectly quiet some place in order for me to hear netflix or youtube, or I have to always have headphones with me. The Galaxy S II Skyrocket was loud as hell and I could hear it fine over crowds.

The camera sucks cause if there was any source of light behind the object I am trying to photo, there's bleed in from that light source so the picture end's up sucking. Also I don't think it has any stablization feature?? All the pictures I take come out blurry. And 5 mega pixel? Really? This is your flag ship phone?

THE ONLY THING, that I've found good about this phone thus far is the download speeds. If I'm in a good area or outside, I get 22+mbps down, 9+ mbps upload.

So yeah, all in all. I miss my iPhone, AND I miss my Skyrocket. I feel sorry for those suckers who paid 300 for this peice of s**t. Great now I'm angry again.

I got my Galaxy Nexus Feb.8th. It rebooted itself 3 times. The volume would decrease on its own. I would be in the middle of a conversation and all of a sudden, the other party is unable to hear me. I could hear them. I figured it was just a defect in that phone so I exchanged it for another one. The same problems were occuring. Some of my apps no longer worked. I took it back and so I now have a temporary phone until the razor maxx comes in next week. I love android and have never wanted the Iphone. I think Google should have worked on ice cream sandwich before putting it out right now!

I purchased my Nexus in mid-Dec 2011 -- it worked perfectly until last week... for "no apparent reason" it now auto-reboots at least twice each day. I'm not using WiFi and have not added new apps or widgets -- UGH. Maybe 4.0.3 will provide a fix -- if we ever get it???

Mine was also rebooting randomly. Sometime while talking on the phone, other times i'd look over and it was rebooting.

I installed the leaked 4.0.4 on my unlocked GNex and the rebooting is gone.

The radios funciton now a little better (can get data) BUT still sometimes many times a day I loose all data connectivity and have to reboot, then it works fine.

So, 4.0.4 is still a big bust. I see now why no other manufacturers or phones are shipping out ICS. There just too many bugs and dropping all data and requiring a reboot would be a disaster for carriers. Google still ships beta products no matter what we think.

I'm ready also that the car mount keeps being delayed because the GNex software just won't know it's in car mode reliably.

Mine just rebooted again. Words with Friends (Free) was running in the foreground. That's the only *new* thing on the phone. Frustrating.

Sadly words with friends is so poorly coded and bloated up the rear it honestly not worth having on your phone.

There are better coded apps that offer the same type of feel and work better.

Is that intended to mean that WWF was responsible for the reboot? I've had several other unexplained mid-day and middle of the night reboots prior to having WWF installed. This was the first one that happened when I was looking directly at the phone and interacting with it. Other reboots I've just happened to notice as the phone was coming back.

My comment about WWF was just intended to offer some insight into what was happening at the time that I knew about.

Again - to be clear - my phone has rebooted perhaps a dozen times during the month of Feb without any known cause - only 1 of those times took place after installing WWF.

For the record. The coding for WWF or any of the Zynga apps whether mobile or embedded are poorly coded.

Next time you crash post up a logcat here please. Also go into your battery stats and take a screenshot.

Are you folks also having trouble with data disconnecting and not reconnecting?

So you have to turn off/on airplane more or reboot? this seems to be influenced by power saving settings and region (towers).

I got one Friday, 3/9. On Saturday 3/10 it suddenly began rebooting continuously -- I see the Google logo, then the colorful rotating "shards of glass", then a buzz, then a black screen, then Google logo.

Took it back this morning, got a new one (I don't know if I got a new SIM card) and by 5 pm the same thing happened. Continuous rebooting. The only way to get it to stop is to remove the battery.

The thing is, I really like this phone. This behavior seems more extreme than everyone else is experiencing.

Both times it started while I was in my car. The first time it happened while I had it in the car charger -- in my driveway. The second time it was not charging. I noticed it after a half hour drive, but it could have started at any time between my leaving the house and the discovery a half hour later.

Everyone with the reboot problem:

The rebooting is caused by the software of ICS. It's quite BETA and has many issues like very poor battery life, random reboots, disconnects from data network.

The latest seems to be the software is so bad, this why Samsung keeps delaying the Car Dock with power. The phone won't go into car mode and stay there. buggy!

Root your phone and update to the leaked 4.0.4 update and the rebooting will go away. There's also some cool new buttons in the browser lab extension. But, it still drops on the 4g network and i often have toggle airplane mode on & off to restart the radio. there's an authentication (login) bug. It's really easy to root and apply the update. It's a (was a) Google developer phone.

So wait for the ROM update, root the phone, complain to Verizon that it's a beta phone. :smileyhappy:

:smileyhappy:hi,there. not a problem! I know how to preform a hard reset properly. one day, i downloaded one stupid app which made me sick and then i had to get my device hard reset. i am glad to share my experience with you.

A<Preferred method>

1.From the home screen, select Apps.

2.From the APPS tab, select Settings.

3.From the PERSONAL section, select Backup & reset.

4.From the PERSONAL DATA section, select Factory data reset.

5.Select Reset phone.

Note: If presented, enter the current passcode or draw the unlock pattern.

6.Select Erase everything.

Note: Allow several minutes for the factory data reset and reboot processes to complete.

7.Refer to Initial Activation and Setup.

B<Alternate method>

1.Press and hold the Power button.

2.Select Power off

3.Select OK.

4.Press and hold the Volume keys+Power button simultaneously until bootloader mode (image of an Android with Start) appears then release.

5.Select Recovery mode.

Note: Utilize the volume keys to cycle through the available options and the Power button to select.

Note: The device will restart in Recovery mode.

6.From the Recovery mode screen, press and hold the Power button then press the Volume up key.

7.Select wipe data/factory reset.

8.Select Yes -- delete all user data.

Note: Allow several minutes for the factory data reset process to complete.

9.Select reboot system now.

Note: Allow several minutes for the reboot process to complete.

10.Refer to Initial Activation and Setup.

yeah, you got it.. smartphones generally smart your life, but sometimes it performs as blockhead.

while, to my comfort, i succeeded hard resetting it for two times..now it works wonderfully as my expected.

I just wanted to give my two cents on the reboot issue. For the first two weeks of having this phone it would reboot in facebook. It would reboot in email. It would reboot while rebooting(reboot three times in a row). I reset to factory default a couple of times. Did not load any app's outside of ICS. Only item self configured was email. Still had reboot issues. I finally went to the VZW and got a replacement. With the new phone I have had no reboot issues. Not one. Now if I could get the phone to stay connected to the network and stop dropping calls....

Here's an explanation of why Verizon 4G LTE phones have trouble staying connected to the internet. I have to continually use airplane mode to restart the raidos so I can get internet access. Sometimes need to reboot. Maybe be happening mostly when the phone goes into power-saving mode.

Seems it may just be worse on the GNex but it's all 4G Verizon phones.

In follow up of my post of the 11th, I'd first comment that there seems to be two patterns of rebooting that one can see...

1) It turns out that when you leave your home WiFi area, some phones will continuously reboot until you return to your home WiFi area. The only way to get it to stop is to remove the battery. This is what mine did. I'm happy to report that doing a Factory Reset solved the problem. I've reloaded all my apps, including a batery saver program (Juice Defender) and things seem to be working.

2) Most of the people in this thread seem to be getting periodic, random reboots. I've not (yet) had that problem.

Only this forum (and a parallel forum on the WiFi reboot problem) provided answers to my problem. The people at the Verizon store were clueless.

Anyway, if anyone is having the CONTINUOUS reboot problem when they leave home, try the procedure outlined by "myandrodlife" posted March 16.

I have had my GNEX from when it was released. I have only seen a few reboots. Most of them has occured when I have been in a weak 4g signal area. It is so minimal that I have ignored it so far, until recently. Since two days my phone was rebooting more erratically and frequently. The only new app I installed was the Facebook Messenger (not the Facebook App) and I immediately uninstalled it. Since the uninstall no reboots yet. Just wanted to share this with folks, so they can also look at and rule out misbehaving apps if at all.

This is the only pattern I've noticed too. The last two times it rebooted itself (just sitting there doing nothin'), I checked and saw that a system update check had just happened prior...no update done, of course...just a check. I called Verizon support. They don't have any record of known issues. She logged it and sent to Samsung.

I was having the same reboot issue as well with my GNEX. Often rebooted using camera and switching to the gallery. I looked at the installed apps (which was very few due to my personal feeling about keeping computing devices "clean") and I zero'd in on one potential culprit. I decided to try disabling the VZ Backup Assistant and have had no issues with the random reboot since. This was at least 3 weeks ago. I also noticed a decline in the random overnight battery drains, but this did not fix that totally. Funny thing is that this app did not appear in my list of apps using power. Not sure why that is but my phone is pretty much stable now minus the losing signal issue.

I really like this phone but I wonder if I made a mistake buying it. I cannot say that this is a reliable phone as the signal will go dead and I won't receive messages until I realize it is stuck with the no signal until I manually reboot the phone. If the next update does not fix this issue, I will argue to replace this phone with a RAZR since it will be getting the ICS update down the road and ICS was the selling point of the GNEX for me.

Have had this phone for only 1 week and have experienced 2 random shutdown/reboots. Once it randomly shut down while not in use and would not restart no matter how long I held down power button and not until I removed/replaced the battery. The reboot happened while on a call and right after leaving Verizon to complain about the phone freezing up while dialing trying to make some calls in an area known to have decent 4g connection! The reps at Verizon sounded clueless as always and blamed the phone saying that it does have "known issues" but other than that offered no help other than to log the problem until it happens again! I really like this phone but after reading about all the issues a lot of users are having I'm not so sure anymore. It seems to potentially have a lot to offer but it is for now just that, a potentially good phone, and then only when it works! VERIZON, GOOGLE, SAMSUNG CAN YOU HEAR US....somebody PLEASE HELP!

You have it for only one week, and it bothers you that much... return it and get your upgrade back, and wait for an update and see if the problems go away when the update comes... Best solution...

My GN reboots every time the system checks for updates and lately (last 7 days), the system has been checking for updates 2-3 per day. Why is it suddenly checking so often for updates and is there anyway that I can set it to check for updates less frequently?

it should have the options that enables users to restrict the auto-update. actually, Verizon Wireless always kindly launchs the update when they get ready for all things. any users would get this update when they are not roaming, but, it will never launch updates 2-3 per day. I have not met that kind of update yet. i hope this would be fixed and there will be an update to improve.

I'm just here to mention that my Galaxy Nexus randomly reboots, whether in a call, using an app or on its own. Also, voice quality is sub-par in most cases, where others think I sound muffled. I can hear them fine, though. Called customer support once about a month ago and they were aware of the issues and suggested an update would be available around Apr 1. It's still doing it and not sure whether it received an update. Love Android Ice Cream sandwich and like everything about the phone except the volume rocker switch--but having it randomly reboot and have poor voice quality doesn't make much sense. Still using my backup personal phone from Sprint (EVO 3D) most of the time instead. It actually roams on the Verizon network in some places and sounds much better!
