My Samsung Galaxy Note 8 keeps shutting down on it's own and has been doing it for a few months, at least. I have to hold down two buttons outside the phone for 10 seconds to get it to power back up. Anyone else with this issue? Do I have a bad phone or what? I woke up this morning and it had shut down again while I was sleeping. Also, I was talking on the phone a few days ago and the screen went black. I couldn't get it back on and I couldn't turn it off or on. I had my husband call it and all he got was ringing.. which I didn't hear. Help!

I've been researching and I think i'm going to wipe the cache partition. See if that does it. Supposedly it gets rid of the "black screen of death" and other issues. I read that we should be doing this after any updates and that it would not wipe out the apps or data.. just the unneeded junk. I'm finding that this is happening to a lot of Note 8 phones. Shame Samsung can't get it right.

Let us know if that worked. It does help with a number of problems that we have with our phones.

It worked for a few weeks and then shut down in the middle of the day yesterday and then again last night while i was sleeping. Luckily I woke up before the alarm was to go off or I would have overslept.

Bridgetterad, we do appreciate you working with us on this matter. Updates are pushed out to the device as soon as it is available. I apologize that your device did not give you notification that it was available for you to download. Keep us updated on how the device works after since your phone was just updated. With regards to getting notification from Samsung, this is odd. Are you using a health check app from Samsung? Where do you see this notification?

Hello, My note 8 is now starting to do the same, shutting down all the time. I charge it up, but it still shuts down. When I leave it plugged in to the charger, it won't stay on long enough for me to sign in. I had an update this morning and it started doing this shut down thing. What can I do from here?

Hello oh2fl,
I rely on my phone every day and would be concerned too if I were having any issues with it. What exactly is going on when the device shuts down? Are you doing something in particular on the device when this happens?

No there seems to be no one thing going on when it shuts off. It just goes to a black screen and then I hold the power button to turn it back on and sometimes it will stay on and other times it won't stay on long enough for me to even sign in. I do have a question though about updates to the Google apps I have on my phone. I have automatic update on, but it doesn't seem to be updating when the phone is off. I go 1 day with 7 apps that need to be update to 3 days later, 38 apps need updating. Could this be the problem? It did shutdown today while those apps were updating. Maybe there is something in there causing the problem. Again, it shuts down at odd times not just updating.
Thank you.

Thank you for the information. Does it let you manually update one app at a time? Could you tell us which software version you are currently running?

Yes I can manually update the apps one at a time, but I was able to hit update all yesterday, there were 37 updates available. It took all day for the apps to update. I have it set for auto-update for all apps, and I have both wifi and data set for the updates. I just don't understand this auto update feature, aren't the app supposed to update in the background? Does the phone need to be plugged in? Is that causing the shut downs?
The version I have is Android Version 9, and the latest update was SMR-Jan. 2020 Release 1.
Thank you.

I appreciate you taking the time to work with us. It is possible a corruption in one of the applications is causing the restarts. Some aplications will require manual updates as the file can be very large and they want you to decide how it should be downloaded. Since getting all the applications up to date has the device restarted? YaleK_VZW

Hi, well for the past few days it has not restarted. However I am still confused about updating the apps. I have it set to upgrade automatically but it does not do that, I still have to hit the upgrade all for it to start the updates. Isn't it supposed to do that in the background? Can you help me with that?
Thanks

Great question, we can definitely assist you with the details about your applications updating automatically. Some applications may need to be manually updated like Facebook Messenger. We can also review some details, On your phone if you access the hamburger icon on the top left then settings. Under Auto update you should have 'over any network' selected. Also, under App download preference select the same option.

Hello, well since I reported this issue, my phone has gotten worse. Lately, after this last update from 2 weeks ago, there is weird pixel lines going across the screen, and sometimes it gets larger and fills the whole screen, and then everything freezes. It turns on but now it is a black screen and I can do nothing on it. A call came in but I could not answer it because the black screen wouldn't let me. I can't even shut it off now. It's on because the blue message light is flashing. What can I do? I can't afford a new phone, and I admit that I am not very strong when it comes to phone technology. Can someone please help me?

There has been no damage to my phone at all. It still looks new! The issue now has gotten worse. The phone will turn on, but the screen remains black and unresponsive. I know it is on because the blue light flashes for messages and the pink light for voice mail. When I try to do the reset, nothing happens. By that I mean when I hold down the power and volume down buttons the screen remains black. I can feel the phone doing something, like buzzes and clicks, but that is all. I cannot turn it off now. I was able to charge it, but the screen was totally black during this process. I have a feeling that there is no fix for my phone and it is junk now. I welcome any help whatsoever! Thanks everyone.

brigetterad,
No one enjoys having their phone shut off on it's own. I've been there before too. Let's get this fixed for you right away, I'm here to help. Wiping the cache partition is a good step to take. Please keep us informed here on the results. Has your Note 8 been exposed to any liquid or physical damage? Is your device able to power on at all? What happens when you plug it into a charger?

That lasted about 2 weeks and here I am again... jacked up phone. No damage at all to my phone. I only download apps from the Google play Store... No clue why it keeps doing this. I'm even closing all the windows several times a day. Is this a known issue with this phone? Maybe Samsung has a patch for it that I need to know about? It shut down yesterday during the day and then last night while i was asleep.

I just checked and apparently Verizon has a system update for my phone.. from 1/1/18. I had no clue it was even there until i checked. It's a security update and should have patches to fix screen freezes and a few others. It didn't say anything about a fix for the phone shutting down by itself.. but maybe it will help. Can't believe how difficult it is to get an answer on why this is shutting down.
