Galaxy S4 Messaging symbol

Question

I recently got the Galaxy S4 and did all the updates and settings so I think (anyway) but on the bottom of main screen where it shows the messaging I can't figure out how in the settings so that if I get a txt message it shows I have one. How or where in the settings can I fix this issue

While in the Messaging app, press the Menu button, then Settings, and ensure that Notifications is checked.  Also check Preview Message if you want that information shown on your lock screen.
