Google Navigator locking up after latest update

OK so after the update on Friday, Google Navigator has stopped working.  After entering the address it just says "Google Navigator" on the screen and the phone locks up.  Pulling the battery resets the phone but the App still continues to lock up.  By the way a reset button would be nice, I mean, this taking it apart and pulling the battery is really getting old.

Next, I checked the Android Market thinking maybe I could just download a new Google Navigator App but it no longer exists there.  Google Maps is there but not Google Navigator. {word filter avoidance} is up with that?  So the App doesn't exist anymore?

So off to the Verizon store I go to get it fixed (lol) and of course they know nothing of the problem and the only solution that they can pull out of their butt is to perform a hard reset on it.  Now maybe that would actually work but going through the hassle of reloading all my apps, email, ringtones, etc and recustomizing my phone again is really getting {word filter avoidance} old too.

I see others are having issues with Google Maps but that part is working fine for me.

Navigation comes with Google Maps. There isn't a separate application.  I had the exact same issue you had after the Gingerbread update.  Simply uninstall Google Maps, reboot, and install Google Maps and I bet your problems are solved.

Hello Runsilent23,

I didn't realize Navigator was a part of Maps since I have two different icons, one for each.  I will definitely try reinstalling Maps then - anything but resetting it to factory default settings.  Thanks.

There is actually 4 different programs that comes with Google Maps... Maps, Navigator, Places, and Latitude.

I am having the same problem. I contacted VZ tech support who acted like this was the first time they have heard of the problem. Just out of curiosity is anyone having problems running Google Current?

Did you search these forums for others having the issue before you went to the Verizon store? There are numerous threads out there with people having the same problem, and there are 2 possible solutions that are given there by others that have had the issue, myself included. It is the Navigation app everyone is having the problem with, the Maps app works fine.

I think you are confusing a "hard reset" with a "factory reset". A "hard reset" is shutting off, pulling the battery, putting it back in, then turning back on. A "factory reset" actually wipes the device to factory defaults, thus making it look like a brand new phone.

If you are still having the problem, try this:

Remove Google Maps

Shut off phone

Pull battery

Put battery in

Turn phone on

Install Google Maps

Try it

If that does not work, do the same thing again, but turn on wifi and connect to some wireless somewhere before installing Google Maps and trying it. This is what worked for me. You do not need wifi on all the time after that, just that first time.

Hi Newdroidusrr, thanks for the reply.

I did do a search but only went back a few days since I was sure my problem was due to the upgrade that I received on Friday.

The Verizon employee at the store specifically called it a "hard reset" and said that it would return the phone back to the factory settings.  You're right, "factory reset" would probably be a better term.  Either way, I wouldn't let the Verizon rep do it without trying something a little less drastic first.  He spent less than 30 seconds looking at my phone, and a factory default was the only solution that he offered.  I think he could have done a little bit more to target the problem and fix the bug without wiping out everything.  A few months ago they did a factory reset, and I spent an entire evening getting my phone back to the way it was, or almost anyway, I did not get all of my apps back that I paid for.  A couple of them were expensive and the company that makes them no longer offered the version that I had, and if I wanted them back I would have to pay again for the latest version.

Anyway, I'll try reinstalling the Google Maps app and see if that fixes the Navigator app.  Thanks.

I've been trying to resolve the Google Maps Navigation "locking up" issue and I think I've finally figured out what causes it! It seems that any time I start Google Maps Navigation after I plug the phone into the car dock, it locks up. This includes even if I plug it into the car dock and then remove it from said dock then try to start up Navigation.

I wonder if it's a combo of the latest upgrade + the "Car Cradle" app that messes things up...

Not necessarily, mine just did the same thing just by using it. It froze on the logo. I did a hard reset of the phone, cleared the data for Maps and Navigator, and then fired it back up, and it worked fine. There was an update to Google Maps the other day, and then it hung. I wonder if there is something that happens in the updates that corrupt the local data files, and when it tries to load them, it can't, and hangs.

I also have the problem with Maps/Navigation locking up when I make a request to find an address or map. this is what I have found out:  if I use Maps before I have a GPS lock the program seizes up, if I use program after I have GPS lock Maps/Navigation works perfectly. I have found that the app GPS Status provides me with fastest lock time even faster than GPS Test app.

This is not a solution but you may find it a useful work around.
