How can I see if my files are still on my SD card?

All of a sudden I got the notification that my SD card was damaged. I was advised to try and "mount" my SD card to be able to save them to the phone, however now everything on the SD card is gone, but it still shows as the memory is being used.... I have no idea what happened. Are my photos gone? Any way to get them back?

Do you have a micro-sd card reader?  Then you could remove it(make sure to unmount it first) and plug it into your computer to see if the files are on it.  Depending on your computer(Mac, Windows, etc) there are ways to check for errors on a micro-sd card to try and fix it.
