How can it be the Mobile Hotspot feature worked, failed, and then worked again?

I am having a love hate relationship with my Galaxy S3. The latest experience happened when I arrived at the beach expecting to connect to the Internet through a mobile hotspot established on my Galaxy S III; but that was not to be. When I turned on my Macbook it could not find the mobile hotspot named Cavanaugh established a half hour earlier with help from a Verizon Wireless Sales Consultant, and all devices were allowed to connect. What could cause this inconsistency!

I went home and as I customarily do I plugged my cell phone into its charger. The battery had 44% capacity left, I like to recharge to 100% at the end-of-day, so I recharged the cell phone to 100%. Guess what? With the cell phone battery fully charged the mobile hot appeared on my notebook, and I connected the notebook to the Internet through the cell phone.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? How much battery juice is needed to run mobile hotspot?

While I am unsure how much battery is "needed" to run the hotspot, the battery WILL drain faster when the hotspot is active. Quite possibly, the phone will deactivate the hotspot when the battery falls below a certain level.

This is the reason I ONLY have my hotspot turned on when I want to use it. I don't see a reason to have it active when not using it, along with the "possibility" of someone hijacking my signal in order to use my data stream without having to pay for it.

rcschnoor - Thanks for the advise I intend to ONLY turn my hotspot on when I want to use. I found out why it didn't work when I got to the beach. The reason it didn't work was I didn't turn My Mobile Hotspot ON.
