How do I get rid of duplicate contacts??

My husband's has 350 contacts just for me. It was a work phone and over the course of 5 years that he worked for the company, it duplicated his contact list over and over. Is there a simple way to prevent this from happening? Is there a simple way to merge the contacts?

i delete them on the phone, keeping the one with the most info.

if contacts are in google, on my pc i see"duplicates" listed on the left side but can't see the same inn contacts on the phone.
