I have installeld the pandora app on my phone, and of course I am worried about my data, how can I tell if the app is running or not when I am not using? I am worried it is using my data even when I am not using it.

Your phone has a data meter in settings.
learn how to close apps on your model of phone. On my Samsung, it's hold my home button and it shows all recently used apps. Then I swipe or tap x to close. Your phone may operate differently
Even better, go into data usage, find the app, click it, then put an x in the checkbox for "restrict background data"
