How do I use data during calls?

I'm a little confused. Since I switched to vzw, I have not been able to use data while on a voice call. I accepted that as a vzw shortcoming. However, last night with my son home from college, one of his buddies toldd me that vzw fixed this. I told him that I couldn't do both. He's on vzw with a Nexus phone. He called me and during the call, he browsed the net while I got the pop up saying no data while using voice.  Neither of us were connected to wifi. I have a Galaxy S6. What's the deal?

Make it easy as do it this way:

GO to Settings > Advanced Calling > Activate. Follow the on screen prompts to enable the service, and Note any changes the system makes in order to enable the feature.

Once activated, if it isn't already, you should see the phone bring up a second option below the activate button. With this, you'll have the ability to turn on or off HD Voice. HD Voice, also known as Voice over LTE, is what will give you voice and data while in an LTE area connected to LTE.

Yes the s6 has advanced calling but you have to go online or call Verizon to activate

If I want to do it online, how would I do that?  This is crazy that I'm finding out this way.
