I, too, would like to know how to get rid of the "Connected as an Installer" mode. The following behavior did not exist until my Galaxy SIII was updated to 4.3...
When I plug the USB into my car, a Honda Accord 2013 with "HandsFreeLink", the message "Connected as an Installer" appears on the phone (with the connection sound), then after 30 seconds reverts to MTP (connected as media). Unfortunately, after about 5 seconds it emits the connection sound again and displays "Connected as an Installer". The display wakes up, etc. Every 30-35 seconds the cycle repeats - connected as media, sound, display brightens, connected as installer, ...
This is very annoying and I don't know how to make it stop. All just to get a charge on my phone while commuting.
Please suggest a fix.

I'm seeing the same annoying issue and can find nothing about it. Can anyone indicate what's happening and how to fix?

Hi, I have an Android LG G2 so the suggested fix may be slightly different on your model of phone.
1. Tap Settings, General, Scroll down to System, Tap PC connection, Ask upon connecting (so the box is checked).
2. As soon as you plug your phone into your PC, Tap the Mode you want to use. And you're good to go.
I hope this helps all of us who have been so frustrated with Verizon's (non)support on this issue...
