I just got this phone over the weekend. I set certain notification sounds for specific contacts, but when they text it still plays the default notification, regardless of what I do. Any suggestions? I've tried powering the phone off then back on and it still does it

Congrats on your new phone! I see you are certainly enjoying the phone with the new features it has to offer. Do you use the native SMS app (yellow-white envelope icon) or Verizon Messages? (red icon)? Please advise to better assist.
